Chapter 5 - The Sister’s PleaTen minutes later, the heavy oak doors of the study opened, and Chloe Sterling was escorted inside by two security guards.

The transformation in Chloe was staggering. The arrogant, untouchable golden child of society was gone. Her hair was unwashed, her designer clothes wrinkled and stained, her face hollow and pale as she trembled in the middle of the spacious room. Without the constant, parasitic medical support derived from Genevieve’s body keeping her insulated, Chloe looked fragile, small, and utterly defeated.
The guards released her arms, stepping back toward the door.
Chloe stared at Genevieve, her lower lip quivering violently. She didn't look at Julian at all.
“Genevieve,” Chloe choked out, taking a desperate, stumbling step forward before dropping hard to her knees on the Persian rug. “Please. You have to help us.”
Genevieve didn't move from her armchair. She looked down at her adoptive sister with a cold, detached indifference that chilled the air in the room. “Help you, Chloe? After everything?”
“Daddy is going to die in federal prison!” Chloe sobbed, pressing her palms against the carpet, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. “Mom is a broken woman! Everything we had is gone—our accounts are frozen, the house is seized, and my doctors say that without regular access to the specialized Sterling medical protocols, my immune system is going to reject the liver tissue within six months! You’re the only one who can save us!”
Genevieve let out a short, cold breath of laughter. It was a sound devoid of all warmth.
“Save you?” Genevieve asked, standing up slowly from her chair. She walked over until she stood directly above Chloe, looking down at the girl who had consumed her youth like a disease. “For twenty years, you lived a life built entirely on my blood, my organs, and my pain. Every time you blew out a birthday candle, every time you won an award, every time you smiled for the cameras—you were standing on top of my medical files.”
“We’re sisters!” Chloe screamed hysterically, clutching at the hem of Genevieve’s black dress. “We share blood!”
“We share nothing,” Genevieve corrected sharply, pulling her dress away from Chloe’s desperate grip. “You never saw me as a sister. You saw me as an insurance policy. And now that the policy has expired, you expect me to cash out again?”
Chloe looked up, her expression twisting from pathetic begging into sudden, bitter desperation. “You have no heart! You’re just as monstrous as they are! Letting your own family rot—!”
“My family didn't rot, Chloe,” Julian interrupted, stepping forward from the shadows, his voice slicing through the room like a razor. “Your family was a slaughterhouse disguised as a hospital. And your time is up.”
Julian gestured toward the door with a flick of his wrist.
The two security guards stepped forward instantly, grabbing Chloe firmly by her arms and hoisting her off the floor.
“No! Let me go! Genevieve, please!” Chloe shrieked as they dragged her backward toward the hallway, her cries echoing off the mahogany walls until the heavy oak doors slammed shut, cutting her off completely.
Silence reclaimed the study.
Genevieve stood motionless by the window, staring out at the falling rain. The final tether binding her to the Sterlings had just been snapped. She wasn't an organ donor. She wasn't a biological resource. She wasn't a victim anymore.
Julian walked up behind her, gently wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest. He rested his chin on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of her hair.

“Are you alright?” he murmured softly.
“I’m more than alright,” Genevieve whispered, placing her hands over his. “I’m free.”
