Chapter 4 - The Federal SubpoenaWithin twenty-four hours, the fairy-tale alliance between the Vance and Sterling families had been completely scrubbed from society columns, replaced by front-page investigative exposés detailing decades of horrific medical abuse, illegal organ harvesting, and institutional corruption at Sterling Memorial Hospital.

The federal authorities didn't waste time. Backed by Julian Vance’s formidable legal team and the unassailable medical records Genevieve had preserved, federal agents executed a massive predawn raid on the Sterling estate and the private surgical wings of the hospital.

Dr. Arthur Sterling and his wife Eleanor were arrested before they could pack a single suitcase, dragged out of their multi-million-dollar mansion in handcuffs while local news crews broadcasted the downfall live across the nation. Chloe Sterling was placed under immediate medical supervision and federal subpoena, her health no longer protected by the very system that had preyed on Genevieve for years.

Inside the private, high-security study of Julian’s downtown penthouse, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the chaos unfolding outside.

Genevieve sat by the floor-to-ceiling window, wrapped in a plush cashmere blanket, watching the rain wash over the Manhattan skyline. The heavy burden she had carried in the dark for over a decade was finally gone, lifted from her shoulders not by time, but by truth.

The heavy oak door opened softly, and Julian stepped in, carrying two steaming mugs of black coffee. He set one down on the mahogany table beside her and took a seat in the adjoining armchair.

“The Attorney General’s office just called,” Julian said quietly, his expression serious. “Arthur’s bail request was denied. Given the scope of the federal charges—including human trafficking, child exploitation, and illegal organ procurement—he’s looking at consecutive life sentences. The hospital board is dissolving his license permanently.”

Genevieve stared into her coffee mug, watching the dark liquid ripple. “It feels surreal,” she whispered. “For so long, I thought they were invincible. I thought the whole world belonged to people like them.”

“People like them only hold power as long as their victims stay quiet,” Julian replied, leaning forward, resting his forearms on his knees. He reached out, gently covering her hand with his own. “You weren't quiet, Genevieve. You broke the system from the inside out.”

Genevieve looked up, meeting his steady, warm gaze. “You didn't have to do all of this, Julian. When you saw the scars... you could have walked away. You could have annulled the marriage quietly and pretended none of this ever happened.”

“Walk away?” Julian let out a soft, humorless chuckle. “Genevieve, I’m a Vance. When we make a commitment, it’s absolute. And when someone tries to hurt my family—or attempts to pass off damaged goods as my bride—I don't walk away. I go to war.”

A genuine, soft smile finally touched the corners of Genevieve’s mouth, warming her face in a way that made her look years younger.

“A war,” she repeated, testing the word. “Is that what we’re calling a wedding night disaster?”

“Let’s call it an aggressive renegotiation of terms,” Julian grinned.

Before Genevieve could reply, the secure intercom on the mahogany desk buzzed sharply.

Julian pressed the speaker button. “Report.”

“Sir,” Marcus, Julian’s head of security, spoke through the line. “We have an unannounced visitor downstairs in the lobby. It’s Chloe Sterling. She’s demanding to speak with Miss Genevieve. She claims she has information regarding hidden offshore accounts that could reduce Arthur’s sentence, but she’ll only talk to her sister.”

Genevieve’s expression hardened instantly. The ghost of her past was clawing its way back to the surface one last time.

“Let her up,” Genevieve said clearly. “It’s time to finish this.”
