Chapter 4 - The Counter-Strike of the Desperate(Target: 2,000 words - Focus: Gabriela and Charles attempt to blackmail Preston using fabricated stories to the press; Esther steps up to face them publicly.)

Desperate people do dangerous things. Realizing they were facing total financial annihilation, Uncle Charles and Gabriela attempted a final, malicious counter-strike. They hired a shady public relations firm to leak fabricated stories to the tabloids.

The headlines appeared by evening: “Billionaire Tech Mogul Preston Vance Abuses Mother and Sister, Threatens Eviction Over Family Dispute.”

They painted me as a volatile, cruel son who was under the influence of an unstable wife. They even photoshopped images of Gabriela looking bruised, claiming I had physically threatened her during the gala.

"This is crossing the line," my lawyer said, slamming the printouts on the desk. "We can file a massive defamation lawsuit, Preston, but the public opinion damage is happening right now. It could affect your upcoming public offering for Aegis."

"Let them talk," I said, my fists clenching. "I will handle this."

"No," a quiet, steady voice interrupted from the doorway.

I turned around. Esther stood there, wearing a beautiful, simple emerald dress I had bought her that morning. The creams had started to heal her hands, though the faint red marks remained. For the first time since I came home, the fear in her eyes was gone, replaced by a fierce, protective light.

"Esther, you don't need to involve yourself in this dirt," I said, walking to her.

"They targeted you because of me, Preston," she said, looking up at me, her voice stronger than I had ever heard it. "For months, I stayed silent because I thought I was protecting you. My silence allowed them to become monsters. I won't let my silence destroy your life's work now. Let's hold a press conference. Let the world see the truth."

I stared at her, a profound sense of pride swelling in my chest. My wife wasn't broken; she was a survivor who had finally found her voice.

The next morning, the grand ballroom of the Omni Hotel in Dallas was packed with hundreds of journalists, cameras, and news anchors. Gabriela and Charles sat in a café down the street, waiting to watch my public downfall on TV.

When Esther and I walked onto the stage, the room erupted into a frenzy of questions.

"Mr. Vance, did you threaten your family?" "Mrs. Vance, are the abuse allegations true?"

Esther walked directly to the microphone. She didn't look at the cameras; she looked at the crowd with absolute dignity. She held up her hands, letting the high-definition cameras capture the healing, raw skin from months of chemical exposure.

"My name is Esther Vance," she said clearly. "The only abuse that happened in the Vance family was committed against me, by Victoria, Gabriela, and Charles Vance. While my husband was away expanding the company that funds their lives, I was stripped of my dignity, locked in a service kitchen, and forced to act as an unpaid servant under the threat of destroying my husband's career."

She gestured behind her, and the massive screen behind the stage began playing the full, unedited security footage with audio—revealing every insult, every physical push, and the exact moment Gabriela had mocked her.

The journalists gasped. The live feed went viral globally within seconds. The narrative didn't just flip; it crushed the Vance family entirely.
