“My billionaire family threw a lavish gala in my Dallas estate while I was away, but they pushed my wife into a hidden service kitchen to scrub dirty pots until her hands bled. When I caught my sister telling her, ‘You should be grateful to be here,’ my heart shattered. I didn't scream. I didn't shout. I simply dragged my bleeding, exhausted wife into the middle of the ballroom, locked the doors, and played the house's security footage on the giant monitors. Ten minutes later, my mother’s elite investors were walking out, and my family realized they had just evicted themselves from my fortune.”
The crystal chandelier in the grand living room cast a brilliant, blinding light over the town's elite. Billionaires, high-ranking politicians, and corporate investors stood shoulder-to-shoulder, sipping vintage champagne. In the center of it all stood my mother, Victoria Vance, her diamond necklace glittering as she laughed at a joke made by our primary investor.
But the laughter died the second the heavy double doors banged open.
I walked in, my tailored suit slightly rumpled from travel, holding Esther’s hand tightly. Esther looked small, trembling beside me, still wearing the elegant anniversary dress that was now stained with dishwater and grease, her raw, red hands exposed for everyone to see. Behind us, my sister Gabriela sneaked into the room, her face pale with terror.
"Preston!" Victoria gasped, her perfect society smile freezing on her face. She quickly stepped forward, trying to lower her voice so the guests wouldn't hear. "You're home early, darling. But... why did you bring her out here looking like that? Gabriela was supposed to keep her—"
"Keep her where, Mother? In the service kitchen?" My voice wasn't loud, but it carried a deadly, freezing weight that silenced the entire room. "Locked away like an embarrassing secret while she lives on a folding mattress next to the cleaning supplies?"
Whispers erupted instantly among the guests. Flashbulbs from a few private society photographers flickered.
"Preston, don't be ridiculous," Victoria hissed, her eyes darting nervously to the investors. "Esther simply offered to help the catering staff. She feels more comfortable serving than socializing. You know her background."
"Her background is being my wife," I said, my jaw clenching. I pulled out my phone and tapped the smart-home automation system linked to the estate. "But since you want to talk about comfort, let's see what else you've comforted her with over the last six months while I was managing our European merger."
"Preston, stop this madness!" my uncle Charles shouted from the back. "Turn the cameras off!"
"It's too late, Charles," I said calmly.
With a final tap, the massive 98-inch media wall in the living room flickered to life. Instead of the digital art display, it showed a split-screen layout of our home's security footage from the past three months.
The first video played loudly: It showed Victoria throwing a stack of dirty laundry at Esther's face, screaming, "If you want to live under my son's roof, you will earn your keep, you worthless charity case!"
The second video showed Gabriela intentionally tripping Esther in the hallway, causing a tray of porcelain cups to shatter, before mocking her, "Look at you, crawling on the floor where you belong."
The third video, dated just last week, showed Charles and my cousins locking Esther inside the service kitchen, forcing her to sleep on that thin folding mattress because they didn't want her "contaminating" the guest bedrooms while they stayed over.
The ballroom fell into a horrifying, absolute silence. The guests stared at the screens, then at Victoria, their expressions turning from confusion to deep, unadulterated disgust.
"Oh my god," Mrs. Sterling, our largest tech investor, whispered, stepping away from Victoria. "Victoria... you told us Esther was away at a wellness retreat. You kept her as a slave in her own husband's house?"
"No! It's a misunderstanding! The footage is edited!" Victoria shrieked, her aristocratic mask completely disintegrating. She glared at Esther with venomous rage. "You did this! You complained to him! You pathetic, manipulative little cockroach!"
"She didn't say a word to me, Mother," I stepped in front of Esther, shielding her from Victoria’s glare. "Her silence is what broke my heart. Because you broke her spirit. But today, the Vance family empire in Dallas is officially divided."

I looked at the investors. "The Vance Group relies entirely on my tech patents and my personal capital. As of this moment, I am pulling all funding from my mother's and uncle's subsidiaries. Anyone who continues to do business with Victoria Vance is an enemy of mine."
Within two minutes, the living room began to empty. Investors hurried out the door without saying goodbye, leaving Victoria, Gabriela, and Charles standing alone amidst the ruins of their perfect party.
