Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Marble HallAs Elena and Dante descended the shallow marble steps into the heart of the ballroom, the ambient noise dwindled to a tense, suffocating hush. Every head turned, and every pair of eyes locked onto the unexpected pair. Dante’s hand rested lightly yet possessively on the small of Elena’s back, a tactile declaration that she was under his absolute protection.

Marcus finally found his voice, stepping forward from the reception receiving line with a forced, uneasy smile. “Elena,” he called out, his voice cutting awkwardly through the quiet. “I—we didn’t realize you were staying for the reception. And... I see you brought a guest.”
Elena didn’t flinch. She met Marcus’s nervous gaze with cool, unblinking composure, letting the silence stretch just long enough to make him sweat. Before Marcus could scramble for another polite phrase, Dante stepped forward slightly, his smoky-gray eyes fixing on the groom with a predatory stillness.
“Mr. Aldridge,” Dante’s deep, European-accented voice resonated effortlessly across the cavernous room. “I believe congratulations are in order, though it is customary to invite family when welcoming new members into an influential circle. Naturally, my wife preferred to make her own grand entrance.”
The word wife dropped like a lead weight onto the polished floor.

Vivien abandoned her spot beside the floral arch, marching over with indignation flashing in her eyes. “Wife? Don’t be absurd, Elena was single and living in a studio apartment three weeks ago. Who even are you?”
Before Dante could answer, a discreet cough interrupted from the perimeter. One of Dante’s security men stepped forward just far enough for the city’s prominent real estate moguls and investment bankers to recognize him. Muffled gasps rippled through the older generation of guests as recognition dawned. The man accompanying Elena wasn't just wealthy; he was the primary power broker controlling the city's highest-stakes financial and commercial territories.
