Chapter 6 - The Golden Cage No MoreThe launch party for Bennett Creative on a crisp Friday evening in SoHo was nothing like the Plaza gala.

There were no billionaire snobs looking down their noses at vintage clothes, no insecure executives stealing intellectual property, and no toxic socialites waiting to turn someone into entertainment. The industrial-chic loft was packed with genuine creatives, loyal clients who had followed Ayla through her transition, and respected industry leaders who actually knew her name.

Ayla wore a stunning, emerald-green silk dress—not from T.J. Maxx, but custom-designed for her new life—and moved through the crowd with an effortless, radiant confidence.

Near the back of the room, standing beside Luca Bianchi, Matteo watched her with an expression of quiet, unwavering pride. He wore a crisp black tuxedo, looking every bit the feared Manhattan titan, yet his eyes softened every time Ayla caught his gaze across the room.

Her phone buzzed in her clutch. She pulled it out and saw a text message from an unknown number.

“Ayla, please... can we talk? My father lost everything. The firm is gone. Please tell Mr. Cipriani to call off his legal team. We can work something out.”

It was Mabel.

Ayla stared at the screen for three long seconds. A year ago, that message would have filled her with anxiety, making her feel guilty for disrupting the peace, making her want to fix things and apologize for causing trouble.

Now? She simply pressed Block Number, slid the phone back into her bag, and forgot Mabel existed.

She didn't need to fight back anymore. She didn't need to prove anything to people who measured human worth by designer labels. She had built her own table, claimed her own name, and stepped out of the shadows forever.

Matteo walked over, slipping a warm hand around her waist and pulling her gently toward him. "Everything alright?" he asked softly, kissing the top of her head.

"Better than alright," Ayla smiled, leaning her head against his shoulder as she looked out over the crowded room filled with people celebrating her success. "For the first time in my life, I feel completely at home."
