Chapter 5 - The Contractual ArrangementThat evening, the penthouse on the upper floors of the Cipriani Tower offered a panoramic view of the glittering Manhattan skyline, stretching out like a sea of diamonds under the autumn sky.

Ayla stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, holding a glass of sparkling water, watching the distant headlights crawl across the Brooklyn Bridge. The adrenaline of the corporate takeover had finally worn off, leaving behind a strange, quiet stillness.

Footsteps echoed softly behind her, and Matteo walked into the dimly lit room, loosening his tie as he approached.

"The papers have been filed," Matteo said gently, stopping a few feet away. "Dubois signed every clause within twenty minutes. Mabel is currently packing her designer bags, and your new independent agency legally launches on Monday morning."

Ayla turned to face him, a profound sense of awe and disbelief washing over her. "You actually did it. You dismantled an entire corporate machine just to fix a Tuesday afternoon humiliation at the Plaza."

"I didn't fix a humiliation, Ayla," Matteo corrected quietly, stepping closer. "I corrected an injustice. You spent years building other people's kingdoms while living in the shadows. It was time someone built one around you."

Ayla looked down at her hands, suddenly hyper-aware of the fact that despite everything that had happened, they were still legally tied by a spontaneous, impulsive lie spoken under a crystal chandelier.

"Matteo..." she started, her voice softening. "We need to talk about the wedding announcement. The 'wife' part. The media is going crazy. Every gossip column in New York is trying to track down our marriage certificate, and—”

"There is no marriage certificate yet," Matteo interrupted smoothly.

Ayla blinked, startled. "What? But you told the whole ballroom—"

"I stated a future intention," Matteo corrected, a faint, rare smile touching the corners of his lips. He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a small, heavy velvet box—not a ring box, but a formal document holder. He placed it on the marble table between them. "That was a five-minute lie to protect you. But what comes next is entirely up to you."

Ayla opened the folder cautiously. Inside was a legal draft: A Matrimonial and Partnership Agreement. Unlike the cold, sterile corporate contracts she was used to, this one outlined mutual respect, absolute operational independence, personal autonomy, and—most shockingly—an expiration clause that allowed her to walk away at any time if she ever felt trapped.

"Why are you giving me an out?" Ayla whispered, looking up into his dark, searching eyes. "Most men in your position would use a leverage play to lock someone down forever."

"Because I don't want a captive, Ayla," Matteo said, his voice dropping an octave, rich with raw, genuine sincerity. "I want a partner. I’ve watched you for six months from a distance, watching how fiercely you protect your integrity, how brilliantly your mind works, and how courageously you stand your ground when the world tries to shrink you. I didn't marry you for strategy. I married you because I fell in love with the strongest woman in New York."
