Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a SetupThe backseat of Matteo’s custom black Maybach was a sanctuary of dark leather, soft amber lighting, and absolute, hushed luxury. As the vehicle glided silently down Fifth Avenue, away from the glittering lights of the Plaza, Ayla sat rigidly by the window, staring at her own reflection in the glass.

"My job," Ayla murmured, half to herself, as the reality of what had just happened began to crash over her like a tidal wave. "Jean is going to fire me by midnight. Or worse, blacklist me from every branding and communications firm in Manhattan. I spent eighteen months working sixty-hour weeks building my reputation, and I just blew it all up because I couldn't keep my mouth shut."
"You didn't blow anything up, Ayla. You stopped letting thieves harvest your labor," a calm voice interrupted from across the car.
Matteo sat with his legs crossed, resting one elbow on the armrest, watching her with an unnerving level of attention.
Ayla turned to look at him, her frustration finally bubbling past her fear. "You keep talking as if you know me! You’ve never spoken to me in your life. I’m just an ordinary girl who buys clearance dresses and writes pitch decks for ungrateful bosses. Why did you target me tonight? What kind of game are you playing?"
"It’s not a game," Matteo said quietly. He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a slim, manila folder, sliding it across the plush leather seat toward her. "Open it."
Hesitantly, Ayla picked up the folder and flipped it open. Inside were printed copies of pitch documents, strategic outlines, and donor acquisition plans. She gasped softly.
"These are my files," she whispered, looking up in shock. "These are the Q3 expansion strategies I wrote for the Sterling account... but my name has been crossed out. Mabel Laurent’s name is stamped at the top."
"Mabel didn't write a single word of those documents," Matteo said, his voice hardening with cold fury. "Neither did Jean Dubois. For eighteen months, Dubois & Laurent has been systematically rebranding your intellectual property, passing your strategic genius off as Mabel’s work, while paying you a junior salary and keeping you buried in the background so you wouldn't notice your own value."
Ayla felt the blood drain entirely from her face. She had suspected it, of course—she had seen the subtle discrepancies, the way clients looked confused when Mabel stumbled over technical questions about strategies Ayla had personally drafted. But seeing it documented, compiled, and laid out by Matteo Cipriani’s intelligence network was entirely different.
"How... how do you know this?" Ayla breathed, clutching the folder to her chest.
"Because six months ago, I tried to buy out a tech-logistics startup called Horizon Grid," Matteo explained evenly. "The deal fell through because Dubois & Laurent swooped in with a counter-proposal that completely outmaneuvered my investment team. When I investigated who engineered such a brilliant, airtight strategy, my analysts dug past Mabel Laurent’s public profile and found your digital footprint stamped into every meta-data log, every draft revision, and every late-night email server sync."
Ayla stared at him, her mind spinning. "You were tracking my work?"
"I was tracking the person doing the work," Matteo corrected, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a piercing intensity. "And when I found out that same brilliant, resilient woman was being forced to sit in a ninety-dollar dress while wealthy sociopaths laughed at her... I decided it was time to change the power dynamic."

"And your solution was to announce to all of Manhattan that we're married?!" Ayla incredulously threw her hands up.
"It’s not just a lie, Ayla," Matteo said softly, leaning forward. "It’s a legally binding contract waiting to be signed. And it starts with destroying Dubois & Laurent from the inside out."
