Chapter 6 - The Fall of Vanguard HoldingsForty-eight hours later, the financial and legal world of New York City was in absolute, irreversible freefall.

The front page of The Wall Street Journal screamed a single headline in massive bold letters: VANGUARD HOLDINGS COLLAPSES AMID FEDERAL RAID; CEO JULIAN VANCE ARRESTED ON CORRUPTION AND RACKETEERING CHARGES.
Sitting in the penthouse office of Farnese Global in Manhattan—high above the glittering lights of Broadway—I watched the news broadcast on a wall-mounted flat-screen television while sipping a cup of black coffee.
Federal agents had raided Vanguard’s headquarters at dawn, seizing billions in hidden assets, uncovering secret offshore accounts linked to municipal bribery, and recovering the original 1920s Prohibition-era deeds that proved Vance’s scheme to illegally seize the St. Jude’s subterranean transit network.
And my name—Elena Cross—was right there in the official press release issued by the U.S. Attorney’s office as the chief archival whistleblower who brought the criminal enterprise to light.
The heavy mahogany office door opened, and Salvatore walked in.
He had changed out of his combat gear into a pristine charcoal suit, his hair neatly combed, looking every bit the untouchable king of New York. But the cold, impenetrable wall that had once surrounded him was entirely gone.
He walked over to the desk, placing a thick, legal-bound manila folder right in front of me.
“What’s this?” I asked, looking up at him.
“Your new life,” Salvatore said quietly, resting his hands on the edge of the desk. “The federal arrest warrant has been completely expunged by order of the federal prosecutor. Vanguard’s legal team is too busy destroying themselves to ever look your way again. And the Farnese Foundation has just endowed a permanent historical preservation chair at Columbia University—with you as its director.”
I stared at the folder, my throat tightening with a sudden wave of emotion. Just a few days ago, I was drowning in the dark waters of the harbor, convinced my life was over.
“You gave me back everything,” I whispered.
“Not everything,” Salvatore corrected, taking a slow step closer.
I looked up into his dark, searching eyes. “What’s missing?”
Salvatore reached out, gently taking my hand in his, his thumb tracing my knuckles with infinite tenderness.
“I saved you from the ocean, Elena,” he said, his voice dropping into a low, resonant hum that vibrated straight to my soul. “And I burned an empire to the ground to keep you safe. But I didn't bring you into my world to let you walk away.”
A slow, breathless smile broke across my face.

“And what if I don't want to walk away?” I asked softly.
Salvatore’s dark eyes flashed with triumph. He leaned down, capturing my lips in a deep, possessive kiss that tasted like victory, warmth, and a future written in the stars.
