Chapter 4 - The Fortress of the FarneseThe Farnese estate in Newport, Rhode Island, was less a home and more a nineteenth-century citadel carved directly into the jagged granite cliffs overlooking the roaring Atlantic. Surrounded by iron-spiked stone walls, patrolled by armed guards and trained Dobermans, and shielded by state-of-the-art electronic jamming systems, it was the safest place on the Eastern Seaboard—and the most intimidating.

We arrived via a private armored motorcade from the yacht landing just before midnight.

As I walked through the massive double oak doors into a grand foyer lit by a roaring fireplace and a colossal crystal chandelier, I felt like a prisoner entering a gilded cage.

“You’ll stay in the East Suite,” Salvatore instructed, handing his heavy wool coat to an elderly, impeccably dressed butler named Arthur, who bowed with quiet precision. “It has a private balcony overlooking the cliffs, a secure terminal connected to our encrypted servers, and a direct line to my study downstairs.”

“I’m not your prisoner, Salvatore,” I said, stopping in the center of the foyer and crossing my arms defensively, refusing to be intimidated by the opulence around me. “You’re protecting me, yes, but you’re treating me like a tactical asset instead of a human being.”

Salvatore stopped walking. He turned slowly, his dark gaze sweeping over me with an intensity that made my breath hitch.

“If I treated you like a tactical asset, Elena, I would have locked you in the panic room downstairs and thrown away the key,” he said, his voice unnervingly calm as he took a step closer to me. “Instead, I brought you into my home. I gave you my protection. And I am about to tear Julian Vance’s entire empire apart brick by brick because he dared to lay a hand on you.”

“And what happens when this is over?” I whispered, my voice trembling slightly as I looked up into his unreadable face. “When Vance is gone? What happens to me?”

Salvatore stared down at me for a long, agonizing moment. The air between us crackled with a strange, undeniable electricity—an unspoken tension that had been building since the moment I woke up on his yacht.

“When this is over,” Salvatore murmured, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly whisper, “you will be safe. But you will never be ordinary again. Once you enter my world, Elena, there is no going back.”

Before I could find the words to answer, a sharp knock echoed through the foyer, and Leo hurried in through the side doors, holding a heavy tactical tablet.

“Boss, we have a breach on the perimeter sensors,” Leo reported, his face grim.

Salvatore’s entire demeanor shifted in a fraction of a second. The complex, intense man standing before me vanished, replaced instantly by the apex predator of the New York underworld.

“How many?” Salvatore demanded.

“Three units. Black-ops mercenaries, not local muscle. They bypassed the external cameras using military-grade signal dampeners,” Leo said, handing the tablet over. “They’re heading toward the cliffside terrace beneath the East Suite.”

My blood ran cold. They had found us. Julian Vance hadn't wasted a single hour.

Salvatore looked down at the tablet, then slowly raised his eyes to meet mine. The coldness in his gaze was terrifying, but for the first time, I saw a fierce, protective fire burning beneath it.

“Stay in this room, Arthur,” Salvatore ordered the butler, drawing a sleek, suppressed Sig Sauer pistol from a concealed holster beneath his suit jacket with terrifying fluid grace.

“Salvatore, wait,” I gasped, grabbing his arm. “Let me help! I know their network architecture—if they’re using encrypted comms to coordinate the breach, I can hack into their frequency from the study terminal and—”

May you like

“No,” Salvatore interrupted, his voice brooking zero argument. He placed a warm, heavy hand on the back of my neck, his thumb gently stroking my skin. “You stay behind me. That is an order.”

With that, he turned and vanished into the darkened hallway, leaving me standing in the flickering firelight with a pounding heart and a war about to explode on our doorstep.
