Chapter 7 - The Unbroken WalkTwo years later, on a warm, golden afternoon in late September, the grand northern corridor of the Falcone estate was filled with bright, warm sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling lace windows.

The air smelled of fresh pine, sweet vanilla, and blooming pink roses from the garden outside.

At four o'clock, the grandfather clock down in the foyer chimed softly: ONE... TWO... THREE... FOUR.

Dante walked out from his primary study at the northern end of the hallway. He wore a soft dark sweater and trousers, his posture tall, proud, and relaxed, his dark gray eyes holding an eternal, weightless peace.

He folded his hands behind his back and began walking slowly down the marble corridor.

Suddenly, five-year-old Sophia ran out from the service kitchen doorway, wearing a bright yellow sundress.

She stopped behind him.

She folded her hands behind her back.

She pushed out her tiny chest.

And taking giant, ridiculous steps, she began following seven paces behind him.

Dante didn't stop walking. But a warm, radiant smile broke across his face as he looked at his reflection in the grand wall mirror.

He stopped near the open door of Carmela's sitting room, turned around slowly, and dropped to one knee on the polished marble floor.

Sophia ran into his broad arms, throwing her hands around his neck, giggling hysterically as he lifted her high into the air.

I walked out from the study carrying our newborn baby boy, Julian, wrapped in a soft blue flannel blanket.

Dante walked over to where I stood, wrapping his broad arm around my waist, pulling me and our son flush against his chest, looking down at our growing family with deep, unreserved love.

"Are you still walking grumpy, Mister?" Sophia teased, poking his cheek with her small finger.

Dante let out a low, deep, and breathtaking laugh that carried warmly down the long marble corridor, pressing a soft kiss into my hair, then looking straight into my eyes.

"I will never walk grumpy again, sweet pea," Dante swore softly under the golden afternoon sun. "Because I am finally, beautifully, and forever home."
