Chapter 3 - The Gathering at the North SideBy 8:00 PM, the grand dining hall of the Falcone estate was illuminated by massive crystal chandeliers, filled with the aroma of roasted meats, vintage red wine, and the suffocating tension of an impending syndicate war.

Sitting at the long mahogany table were six regional bosses of the Chicago underworld—men who controlled ports, gambling houses, and real estate networks across three states.

At the head of the table sat Victor Vance—a fifty-five-year-old, ruthless mobster wrapped in a heavy mink coat, flanked by four armed bodyguards. Vance was the man who had been suspected of orchestrating the ambush that killed Carmela eighteen months ago, though no hard evidence had ever been proven.

Dante sat at the opposite end of the table, wearing an immaculate black suit, his posture relaxed, fluid, and lethal.

Sitting on a high chair directly to Dante's right was three-year-old Sophia, happily eating a bowl of buttered pasta, while I stood quietly behind her chair wearing a simple linen dress provided by the estate staff.

Victor Vance set his wine glass down with a heavy, deliberate CLACK, his small, rat-like eyes glaring down the table at my daughter.

"What is this, Dante?" Vance sneered, his gravelly voice echoing off the stone walls. "I came here to negotiate forty million dollars in riverfront shipping rights, and you bring a servant girl and her bastard child to the high council table?"

The surrounding regional bosses shifted uncomfortably in their seats, holding their breath.

Dante didn't raise his voice. He picked up his silver fork, casually cutting a piece of steak, his dark eyes locked onto Vance with a terrifying, predator-like calm.

"Careful, Victor," Dante spoke softly, every word dropping like ice into deep water. "You are speaking about the people who sit at my table."

Vance let out a bitter, arrogant laugh. "You've gone soft, Falcone! Ever since Carmela died in that ditch, you've been hiding in this house like a broken dog! Now you let a three-year-old girl dictate your household?!"

Sophia set her fork down, looked at Vance’s angry, flushed face, and wrinkled her nose dramatically.

"You talk like a grumpy frog," Sophia announced clearly into the quiet room.

One of the younger regional bosses near the middle of the table let out a sudden, involuntary snort of laughter before clapping his hand over his mouth.

Vance’s face went from flushed red to a dark, murderous purple. He slammed his fist flat against the mahogany table. "Shut that brat up!"

Before Vance’s guards could even react, Dante moved.

CRACK!

Dante’s hand flashed across the table, picking up a silver butter knife and driving it straight through the back of Vance’s right hand, pinning his palm flat to the mahogany wood.

Vance let out a blood-curdling shriek of agony, blood pooling across the white linen tablecloth as his four bodyguards reached franticly for their shoulder holsters.

THWIP! THWIP! THWIP!

Marco and four Falcone operators stepped out from the shadows of the dining hall, raising suppressed firearms, painting red laser dots across the foreheads of Vance's bodyguards.

"If a single weapon clears a holster," Dante whispered, leaning over the table until his face was inches from Vance's sweating, bleeding forehead, "I will feed your men to the river before midnight."

The four bodyguards froze, slowly raising their hands in total surrender.

Dante pulled the butter knife cleanly out of Vance’s hand, wiping the silver blade on a cloth napkin.

"Carmela’s murder was ordered by your brother in Miami, Victor," Dante revealed softly, pulling an encrypted leather folder from his jacket and dropping it flat beside Vance's bleeding hand. "We intercepted the wire transfers two hours ago. Your empire is seized. Your routes belong to the Falcone syndicate."

Vance clutched his bleeding hand, weeping in pain, looking up into Dante’s cold, absolute eyes with pure, unadulterated terror.

"Take them out," Dante commanded smoothly.

As the guards dragged Vance and his men out of the grand dining hall, Dante turned his head toward Sophia, who was calmly sipping her apple juice box.

"Did he look like a frog, Sophia?" Dante asked softly, a faint, genuine smile touching his lips.

May you like

"A big green one," Sophia nodded happily.

Dante let out a quiet, deep laugh that warmed the entire stone hall, reaching out his large hand to gently stroke my daughter's curls, before turning his gray eyes to look up at me with deep, unreserved protection.
