Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the GalaOn a crisp, clear evening in October, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago was illuminated by thousands of golden candles for the annual Carmela Falcone Foundation Gala.

Five hundred high-society guests, city officials, and business leaders filled the hall, raising their glasses in applause as Dante and I stood on the raised stage near the orchestra.

I wore a breathtaking floor-length emerald silk gown, my dark hair styled in glossy waves, holding a bouquet of white orchids. Beside me stood Dante, wearing an immaculate black tuxedo, holding my hand tightly in his broad palm.

Four-year-old Sophia sat at the front VIP table with Marco, wearing a small cream lace dress, happily waving her little hand at us.

Suddenly, the heavy glass doors at the back of the ballroom were thrown open.

Four men in dark leather jackets stepped into the hall, holding high-powered automatic pistols. Leading them was Victor Vance’s younger brother—Julian Vance—who had been hiding in South America for six months following his family's downfall.

"FALCONE!" Julian Vance screamed, his voice unhinged and wild with vengeful rage, pointing his weapon toward the stage. "You destroyed my family! You stole our shipping routes! Now you celebrate while my brother rots in prison!"

The five hundred guests shrieked in absolute terror, scrambling beneath tables, breaking champagne glasses as panic erupted across the ballroom floor.

Julian Vance raised his gun, aiming directly at my chest. "Die, you servant bitch!"

Before Julian could pull the trigger, Dante moved.

He didn't hesitate. He didn't flinch.

Dante stepped smoothly in front of me, his six-foot-three broad frame forming an impenetrable, iron shield over my body, while pulling a suppressed pistol from beneath his tuxedo jacket.

THWIP! THWIP! THWIP!

Dante fired three rapid, surgical rounds across the fifty-foot ballroom floor.

The three enforcers standing behind Julian collapsed instantly onto the carpet floorboards, their weapons clattering away.

Before Julian Vance could press his trigger, Marco stepped out from behind the VIP table, striking Julian’s wrist with his heavy tactical flashlight, disarming him in a single fraction of a second, knocking him flat onto his knees on the marble floor.

"Secure the room!" Marco shouted into his radio as twelve Falcone operators flooded through the emergency exits, restoring total order to the ballroom in less than forty seconds.

Dante turned around slowly, taking my trembling hands into his broad palms, his gray eyes searching my face with frantic, desperate concern.

"Rosa... are you hurt?" Dante asked, his baritone shaking with raw emotion. "Did they touch you?!"

I looked at this powerful, terrifying man—a man who had faced four armed assassins without batting an eye, but who was currently trembling with fear at the thought of me being injured.

I reached up, wrapping my arms tightly around his neck, pressing my face into his shoulder.

"I'm safe, Dante," I whispered softly, tears of pure, overwhelming love spilling over my lashes. "I'm completely safe because you protected me."

Dante pulled me tight against his broad chest, burying his face into my hair, holding me as if I were the most precious, irreplaceable treasure in the entire universe.

Down at the VIP table, four-year-old Sophia clapped her small hands happily, pointing at us with a bright, radiant grin.

"Look, Marco!" Sophia giggled. "Mister is giving Mommy a big hug!"
