Chapter 5 - The Glass HouseA collective gasp echoed through the surrounding crowd of syndicate bosses.

The air in the grand ballroom grew so cold you could see your breath. Lorenzo didn't roar. He didn't pull a weapon. Instead, he took a slow, deliberate step forward, placing himself between Dante Moretti and me.
"My wife died two months ago, Dante," Lorenzo said, his voice terrifyingly calm, carrying a quiet, absolute authority that echoed off the high ceilings. "My son's DNA was verified by three independent laboratories the day he was born. He is my blood. He is the sole heir to the Rossi enterprise."
Lorenzo reached into his inner tuxedo jacket, pulled out a white linen handkerchief, and casually wiped his hands.
"But you," Lorenzo continued, his grey eyes fixing on Dante with lethal precision, "have made a fatal calculation. You thought you could use a tragic, innocent girl from Queens to humiliate me in front of the Commission."
"It's no secret, Lorenzo!" Dante sneered, feeling the eyes of the other syndicate families on him. "She was in Julian's safehouse! She carried a child from that ward!"
"She was an innocent victim of your pathetic hitmen!" Lorenzo bellowed, his voice suddenly exploding like a artillery shell, shattering the silence of the room!
Several women gasped, and even Dante’s bodyguards flinched back.
"She suffered because of your cowardice!" Lorenzo snarled, stepping directly into Dante’s personal space, towering over the older man. "And tonight, you stand in my house, insulting the woman who saved my son’s life. Effective midnight tonight, Moretti... all shipping access through the Port of New York is revoked for your family. Any truck carrying your mark will be seized and burned."
Dante’s face turned bright red with rage. "You can't do that! The Commission—"
"I am the Commission!" Lorenzo growled, his face inches from Dante's. "Now get out of my sight before I paint this white marble floor with your blood."
Dante glared at Lorenzo, his chest heaving, then shot a venomous, deadly look at me before turning on his heel and storming out of the ballroom, his lieutenants scrambling after him.
The tension in the room slowly dissipated, replaced by hushed, awe-struck whispers. The five family bosses stepped forward, bowing their heads to Lorenzo, offering their full, undivided allegiance.
An hour later, we were back inside the quiet sanctuary of the armored limousine, speeding down the dark highway back toward Long Island.
I sat on the leather bench, holding Leo close to my chest as he slept peacefully. My hands were still shaking from the confrontation in the ballroom.
Lorenzo sat across from me. He had poured himself a glass of crystal bourbon, but he hadn't touched a drop. He was staring at me, his grey eyes filled with a raw, intense emotion that made my breath hitch.
"I'm sorry you had to hear his disgusting lies, Hunter," Lorenzo said quietly, his voice rough.
"He was trying to break you, Lorenzo," I whispered, looking up at him. "He wanted to turn you against me."
"He failed," Lorenzo said simply. He set his glass down, moved across the limousine, and sat on the bench right beside me. His large, warm hand reached out, gently taking my trembling hand in his. "No one will ever turn me against you, Hunter. Do you hear me? Never."
I looked down at our joined hands. "Lorenzo... what happens when Leo doesn't need my milk anymore? When he grows up? Am I just going to be... the maid who stayed too long?"
Lorenzo reached up, his long fingers gently cupping my cheek, forcing me to look directly into his eyes.
"You will never be a maid in my life again, Hunter," Lorenzo whispered, his thumb softly tracing my bottom lip. "You healed my son. And without even knowing it... you healed me."
Before I could answer, his head leaned down, and his lips met mine in a deep, desperate, fiercely protective kiss.
My heart exploded in my chest. I melted into his touch, my fingers tangling in his dark hair as the kiss deepened, filled with months of unspoken grief, electric tension, and a powerful, dangerous passion that burned away every fear I had ever carried.

When he finally pulled back, his forehead rested against mine, his hot breath fanning across my lips.
"You stay with me, Hunter," Lorenzo sworn softly. "Not as a nurse. Not as a maid. As my woman."
