Chapter 3 - The Golden CageBy morning, my world had completely inverted.

I was no longer wearing the rough navy cotton maid's dress or carrying a bucket of disinfectant. I was dressed in a soft cashmere sweater and tailored silk trousers, sitting in the private sunroom of the master wing, holding Leo as he fed again.

The mansion, which had been loud with the frantic footsteps of doctors and nurses for weeks, was eerily quiet. Lorenzo had dismissed the entire medical team, keeping only a trusted private physician, Dr. Samuel, who had been sworn to absolute secrecy under penalty of death.

"It's a rare metabolic incompatibility," Dr. Samuel explained quietly, standing beside Lorenzo near the mahogany desk in the corner. "Leo’s digestive tract has a severe autoimmune reaction to foreign proteins. But Hunter’s milk contains specific antibodies and human milk oligosaccharides that coat his stomach lining, neutralizing the inflammation. It’s... miraculous, Lorenzo. She is literally the only reason this child is alive today."

Lorenzo didn't answer. He sat behind his desk, staring at a thick leather-bound folder his head of security, Mateo, had just delivered to him.

"And the background check, Mateo?" Lorenzo asked, his voice low and dangerous.

Mateo, a scarred veteran with graying hair and an icy demeanor, stepped forward. "We pulled the CCTV footage from the Queens alleyway nine months ago, Boss. It was erased from the police servers, but our IT team recovered the backup files."

My heart hammered in my chest. I looked up from Leo, my hands tightening around his blanket. "You found it?"

Mateo looked at Lorenzo, choosing his words with extreme care. "It wasn't a random mugging, Boss. The car that pulled up behind the bakery belonged to a shell company registered in Newark. A shell company controlled by Dante Moretti."

Lorenzo’s hand slammed onto the desk with a crack like thunder!

The mahogany wood groaned under the force. Leo startled slightly in my arms, and I quickly rocked him, whispering sweet nonsense into his ear until he settled back down.

"Dante Moretti," Lorenzo snarled, his eyes flashing with a terrifying, predatory rage. "The head of the Moretti crime family. The same bastard who ordered the car bomb that killed Sophia."

"Why..." my voice trembled as I looked at Mateo. "Why would the Moretti family attack a baker’s assistant in an alley?"

Mateo looked at me with deep, cold pity. "Because nine months ago, Dante Moretti was trying to track down Julian Rossi. Julian owed Moretti four million dollars in gambling debts. Moretti’s men thought you were Julian’s secret informant because you were seen dropping off bread deliveries at Julian’s private safehouse in Queens."

The realization hit me like a bucket of ice water.

The bakery where I had worked... my boss had assigned me to deliver fresh sourdough bread to a brownstone on 42nd Street every Tuesday morning. I had dropped off the bags at the door, never knowing who lived inside. I was an innocent bystander, caught in the crossfire of a mafia war I didn't even know existed.

"So the child she lost..." Lorenzo said, his grey eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that burned through me, "...was not Julian's?"

"No, Boss," Mateo confirmed, bowing his head. "The paternity records recovered from St. Jude’s prove the child carried no Rossi DNA. Hunter was an innocent civilian. Julian used her bakery delivery routine as a distraction to throw Moretti’s hitmen off his trail. When Moretti’s men realized she knew nothing, they left her in that alley."

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the room.

Lorenzo slowly stood up from his desk. He walked across the sunroom, stopping directly in front of my chair. The ruthless mob boss, known across the state for his cold brutality, looked down at me with something that looked dangerously close to remorse.

"You carried the scars of my family's war, Hunter," Lorenzo said softly, his voice dropping into a deep, gravelly tone. "You lost your child because my degenerate brother used you as a shield. And yet... you walked into my nursery last night and saved my son's life."

"I didn't do it for your family, Mr. Rossi," I said, raising my chin, meeting his intense gaze without flinching. "I did it because an innocent baby was dying, and I had the power to stop it. I know what it feels like to hold a cold child. I wouldn't wish that pain on my worst enemy."

Lorenzo stared at me for a long, agonizing moment. Then, slowly, he knelt before my chair, just as he had done the night before.

He reached out, his large, warm hand gently resting over mine as I held Leo.

"You are no longer a servant in this house, Hunter," Lorenzo declared, his voice carrying the weight of an unbreakable oath. "From this moment on, you are protected by the Rossi name. Anyone who looks at you sideways will answer to me. Whatever you want, whatever you need, it is yours. But you can never leave this estate."

May you like

My breath hitched. "What?"

"Dante Moretti knows Leo survived the car bomb," Lorenzo explained, his eyes darkening. "If he discovers that a young woman inside my house is the sole reason my heir is alive, he will target you. You are my son’s lifeline now, Hunter. Which means you are my most dangerous vulnerability."
