Chapter 5 - The Sunrise on the TerraceBy 6:00 AM, the storm clouds over New York had cleared, leaving behind a brilliant, golden sunrise that painted the sky over the Hudson River in shades of rose, sapphire, and gold.

Inside the sunlit master suite of the Blackwood Estate, I woke up feeling warm, rested, and safe.
My ribs no longer throbbed with sharp pain, the swelling around my eye had subsided significantly under Dr. Reed's care, and for the first time in two years, I opened my eyes without fearing who was standing outside my door.
I put on a comfortable cream silk robe provided by the housekeeping staff, stepping out through the French doors onto the stone terrace overlooking the river.
Standing near the marble balustrade, holding two warm cups of fresh coffee, was Nathan.
He wore a plain dark linen shirt with his sleeves turned back, his dark hair catching the golden morning light. When he heard my footsteps, he turned, a rare, genuine warmth lighting up his storm-gray eyes.
"Good morning, Sophie," Nathan spoke softly, handing me a warm cup. "How are your ribs feeling?"
"Much better, Nathan," I answered, taking a slow sip of the crisp coffee. "Thank you."
We stood side-by-side near the stone railing, watching the morning sun break over the water.
"It's over, Sophie," Nathan revealed quietly. "Chief Brennan and Tyler were formally processed at the federal courthouse twenty minutes ago. Their bail applications were denied."
A long, shuddering exhale escaped my lips—a weightless, profound release of two years of suffocating fear. Tears of pure, weightless relief touched my eyes, spilling softly over my lashes.
"Why did you do this for me, Nathan?" I asked, turning my head to look at his sharp profile. "You didn't know me. I was just a waitress at a dive bar."

Nathan turned to face me. He reached out, his broad, warm hand gently framing my jawline, his thumb tenderly wiping away a single tear from my cheek.
"Because the moment you looked at me across that bar, Sophie," Nathan confessed, his deep voice vibrating with an intense, fierce devotion that made my heart leap against my ribs, "I saw a woman of immense courage who refused to break... and I knew I was never going to let anyone hurt you again."
