Chapter 2 - The Alley on 4th StreetThe cold November rain beat a steady, rhythmic cadence against the asphalt as the heavy steel door clicked shut behind us.

Parked in the narrow, trash-strewn alley sat a black unmarked police sedan, its engine idling loudly, white exhaust curling into the freezing air. Sitting in the driver’s seat, wearing his leather jacket, a cocky, arrogant sneer plastered across his face, was Tyler Brennan.

Beside his car stood two off-duty officers in plain clothes, smoking cigarettes under the rusty fire escape.

When the rear door opened, Tyler clicked on his vehicle's high-beam spotlight, blinding the narrow alley in harsh white light.

"Well, well," Tyler’s harsh voice echoed over his car’s loudspeaker. "Look what came creeping out of the trash. I told you, Sophie—you don't get to take shifts without my permission."

I stood behind Nathan, my body shivering from the freezing rain, my hands tightly clasped together.

Tyler stepped out of his cruiser, slamming the driver's door shut. He adjusted his leather belt, his dark eyes locked onto my bruised face with an sickening, possessive satisfaction.

"Come here, Sophie," Tyler commanded, taking three arrogant steps forward. "We're going home. You're going to pack your bags, and then we're going to have a long talk about your attitude."

He didn't notice Nathan standing in the shadow of the brick awning until he was five feet away.

Tyler stopped, his brow furrowing as he looked up at Nathan's tall, broad-shouldered frame. "Who the hell are you? Get out of the way, pal. This is official police business."

Nathan didn't move an inch. He placed his hands casually into his coat pockets, looking down at Tyler with a cold, detached disdain that made the two off-duty officers pause near the fire escape.

"Official police business," Nathan repeated softly, his baritone carried easily over the rain. "Is that what you call stalking a woman you broke two ribs on forty-eight hours ago?"

Tyler’s face contorted in sudden, ugly rage. He reached instinctively toward his hip holster. "You're interfering with a law enforcement officer, buddy. I can put you in a cell at 9th Precinct before midnight!"

Nathan offered a small, razor-sharp smile that held zero warmth.

"You can try, Detective Brennan," Nathan whispered softly. "Or you can look behind your cruiser."

At that exact second, three matte-black armored SUVs turned the corner from 4th Street, blocking the alley exit.

The high-beam lights of the SUVs ignited simultaneously, drowning Tyler’s police sedan in blinding, clinical illumination. Eight broad-shouldered men in dark tactical suits stepped out of the vehicles, their hands resting flat against suppressed sidearms, forming a silent, iron wall across the pavement.

Tyler’s two off-duty officers dropped their cigarettes, their faces draining of every drop of color as they recognized the silver crest stamped on the SUV doors.

THE BLACKWOOD ENTERPRISES GLOBAL.

Tyler took an involuntary step back, his hand freezing on his holster as he stared at Nathan in absolute, horror-stricken panic.

"Blackwood...?" Tyler stammered, his voice cracking into a high, pathetic squeak. "You're... you're Nathan Blackwood..."

May you like

Nathan stepped forward into the white light, stopping two inches from Tyler’s trembling chest.

"By sunrise, Tyler," Nathan promised, every word dropped like an iron weight into the freezing rain, "you are going to wish you had never heard Sophie's name."
