Chapter 4 - The Unmasking at 9th PrecinctAt 3:30 AM, inside the executive office of the 9th Precinct Headquarters downtown, Chief Richard Brennan sat behind his heavy oak desk, slamming his phone receiver down into its cradle.

Sweat poured down his weathered cheeks, ruining his stiff uniform collar.

Standing across the desk, looking pale, disheveled, and trembling with a wild, desperate panic, was his son, Tyler.

"What the hell did you do, Tyler?!" Chief Brennan roared, pointing a trembling finger at his son's face. "I told you to keep your hands off that waitress! I told you she was working at Eddie's bar!"

"She's my girlfriend, Dad!" Tyler shrieked, pacing frantically across the carpet. "She owes me money! Her brother's medical bills were paid out of my department trust fund!"

"She isn't your girlfriend, you idiot!" Chief Brennan bellowed, jumping out of his chair. "Do you have any idea who Eddie works for?! Do you have any idea who owns the mortgage on this precinct building?!"

BOOM!

The heavy double oak doors of the precinct office were thrown open with a thunderous crash.

Two uniformed State Police Marshals cleared a wide path through the squad room.

Walking down the center aisle, wearing an immaculate dark navy suit, his posture tall, fluid, and sovereign, was Nathan Blackwood.

Flanking him was Senior Prosecutor Marcus Sterling and four federal auditors carrying heavy leather briefcases.

Chief Brennan froze behind his desk, his bloodshot eyes bulging out of his head in total, horror-stricken panic.

"Blackwood..." Chief Brennan stammered, his voice cracking into sharp, pathetic fragments. "What... what is the meaning of this? This is a municipal precinct!"

Nathan stepped into the office, stopping two feet from the oak desk. He pulled a gold fountain pen from his pocket, laying a thick white leather binder flat onto the blotter.

"As of three o'clock this morning, Chief Brennan," Nathan announced, his baritone echoing cleanly through the silent squad room, "the State Attorney General’s Office executed a master seizure order on all secondary accounts held under the Police Benevolent Association."

Chief Brennan collapsed back into his leather armchair, the blood completely draining from his face.

"Furthermore," Senior Prosecutor Sterling added smoothly, dropping certified arrest warrants onto the desk, "Detective Tyler Brennan is formally indicted on fourteen federal counts of Felony Domestic Assault, Extortion, Wire Fraud, and Tampering with Evidence."

Tyler let out a high-pitched, hysterical shriek, reaching for his sidearm.

THWIP!

Before Tyler’s fingers could touch his holster, two federal marshals moved with lightning speed, slamming him flat against the oak desk, twisting his arm behind his back, slapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"DAD! HELP ME!" Tyler screamed, tears cutting clean tracks through the grime on his face as he was dragged flat against the floor. "DAD! CALL THE MAYOR!"

Chief Brennan sat motionless behind his desk, weeping quietly as federal marshals placed heavy steel cuffs around his own wrists, ending thirty years of corrupt reign in a single, silent moment.
