Chapter 6 - The New FoundationSpring had finally arrived in Chicago, painting the city in vibrant shades of green and gold. The crisp morning air carried the scent of blooming cherry blossoms along the lakefront, but nowhere was the atmosphere more hopeful than on the top floor of Carter Tower.

The executive suite had undergone a subtle transformation. The heavy, austere mahogany decor had been softened with natural light, modern art, and an air of genuine warmth.
Ava Bennett stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the sprawling skyline of the city where she had once felt completely invisible. She wore a tailored emerald blazer over a crisp silk blouse—and for the first time in over a year, every inch of her skin was completely free of hiding, free of makeup, and free of pain.
A soft knock sounded at the open office door.
"Ava?"
She turned around with a bright smile. Ethan walked in, carrying two cups of artisanal coffee and a thick leather-bound portfolio. He looked relaxed, his tie loosened, a genuine smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
"Good morning, Mr. Carter," she teased gently, stepping away from the glass.
"Ah, remember our new company policy, Ava," Ethan smiled, setting the coffee cups on her desk and pulling her gently into his arms. "No 'Mr. Carter' allowed outside formal board meetings."
Ava laughed, wrapping her arms around his neck and resting her head against his chest. She listened to the steady, strong rhythm of his heartbeat—a sound that had become her favorite sanctuary.
"Well, Executive Director Carter," Ava murmured against his shirt. "What's on the agenda for today?"
Ethan stepped back slightly, opening the leather portfolio on her desk. Inside was the architectural blueprint for a brand-new, state-of-the-art domestic abuse recovery and trauma support center funded entirely by the Carter Foundation—and named, at Ethan's insistence, The Bennett Institute.
"We break ground next month on the north side," Ethan said, looking down at her with fierce, unwavering devotion. "And I want you to chair the board of directors."
Ava stared at the blueprints, her breath catching in her throat. The trauma that had once been used to break her was now going to be used to build a fortress of safety for countless other women who felt trapped in the dark.

"Ethan... I don't even know what to say," she whispered, tears of profound joy welling in her eyes.
"You don't have to say anything," he replied softly, leaning down to press a tender, lingering kiss to her lips. "Just keep changing the world."
