Chapter 2 - The Mask of the SaintThe private dressing suite remained frozen in time as Ava’s confession hung in the air like poison gas. Ethan didn't flinch, but his eyes narrowed into dangerous obsidian slits. The realization hit him with the force of a freight train. Dr. Adrian Vaughn—the brilliant, charismatic pediatric neurosurgeon, savior of hundreds of children, and darling of Chicago's medical community—was a monster behind closed doors.

"Adrian," Ethan said, the name tasting vile on his tongue.
"Yes," Ava whispered, pulling her sleeves down to hide the dark bruises wrapping her forearms. "Publicly, he saves children's lives. Privately... if dinner is five minutes late, if a patient’s family calls our home phone too late at night, or if I look at him wrong while hosting his colleagues... this is what happens."
"And you stayed?" Ethan asked, not with judgment, but with a crushing weight of sorrow. "Ava, why didn't you leave? Why didn't you tell someone—anyone?"
"You don't understand," she wept quietly, a single tear cutting a clean path down her pale cheek. "Adrian’s family controls half the hospital board. My father’s medical debt was wiped out by a grant Adrian secretly secured three years ago. I am legally and financially entangled in his life. If I walk away without proof, he destroys me. He tells the city I'm unstable, ungrateful, and delusional. Who would believe a traumatized assistant over a miracle doctor?"
Ethan stepped closer, his voice dropping an octave, steady and absolute.
"I would."
Ava looked up, startled by the fierce, unyielding conviction in his gaze. For a man who measured his words carefully in boardrooms, his promise felt like an anchor in the middle of a raging ocean.
"Mr. Carter—Ethan, you can't get involved," she pleaded. "This gala is vital for Carter Industries. If a public scandal explodes tonight involving the night's primary honoree and your executive assistant, the press will tear the foundation apart."
"Let them try," Ethan replied coldly. He reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing against her unbruised wrist—a touch so tender and respectful it made her breath hitch. "I didn't build Carter Industries by running away from monsters, Ava. And I certainly won't stand by while a coward in a lab coat destroys the strongest, most brilliant woman I've ever known."
Before Ava could process the profound implication of his words, a sharp rap echoed at the door.
"Mr. Carter? Sir, you're up in five minutes!" shouted Marcus, Ethan's head of security, from the corridor. "The opening video is wrapping up."
Ethan pulled back, his professional mask snapping back into place, though his eyes burned with an inner fire that hadn't been there a minute ago. He pulled a pristine linen handkerchief from his pocket and pressed it gently into her hand.
"Fix your hair, Ava," he instructed softly. "Walk down to the wings when you're ready. But whatever you do... do not smile at him tonight. Leave the acting to us."
With that, Ethan turned and swept out of the room, leaving Ava alone with her reflection. But the terror that had gripped her heart moments before was gone, replaced by a terrifying, intoxicating spark of hope.
Downstairs, the applause swelled as Ethan Carter took the stage. The spotlights blinded the crowd, bouncing off his tailored charcoal suit as he stepped up to the mahogany podium. He delivered his opening remarks with practiced ease, outlining the multimillion-dollar expansion for the Children's Heart Hospital, pledging resources, and praising the tireless dedication of the medical staff.
Seated at the VIP table near the front, Dr. Adrian Vaughn beamed with radiant pride. He was impeccably handsome, with silver-streaked dark hair, wire-rimmed glasses that gave him an aura of intellectual benevolence, and an expensive designer tuxedo that fit his athletic frame to perfection. He turned to the city's mayor seated to his left, chuckling warmly at a private joke.
"A magnificent speech, wouldn't you say, Mr. Mayor?" Adrian murmured smoothly.
" Extraordinary, Adrian," the mayor replied. "And speaking of magnificent, your upcoming recognition is well-deserved. Saving those kids... you're a saint to this city."
Adrian smiled modestly, adjusting his cuffs—cuffs secured by gold links shaped like surgical scalpels. Beneath the table, however, his leg twitched with restless arrogance. His eyes scanned the side entrance of the ballroom, searching for Ava. When she finally slipped into the shadows of the back row, looking pale but composed, Adrian’s eyes narrowed slightly. He gave her a subtle, razor-sharp nod—a silent command reminding her to look happy, look radiant, and prepare to play the adoring fiancée when his name was called.

He had no idea that upstairs, Ethan Carter had already unlocked a digital vault on his personal tablet, uploading a high-resolution forensic file containing medical documentation, encrypted audio logs from previous arguments, and financial tracking records that exposed Adrian's dark underbelly.
The trap was set. All it needed was the final cue.
