Chapter 5 - Shadows of the PastTwo weeks had passed since the catastrophic collapse of Dr. Adrian Vaughn’s career, yet the tremors of the scandal were still reshaping Chicago's medical and political landscape. Headlines dominated the morning papers: The Fall of a Saint, Carter Foundation Exposes Medical Fraud, and The Silence Breakers.

Inside a sterile, fluorescent-lit holding cell at the county detention center, Adrian Vaughn paced back and forth like a caged animal. His designer suit was wrinkled, his hair uncombed, and the arrogant, untouchable aura that had defined his life had completely evaporated.
The heavy iron door rattled open, and a prison guard stepped aside.
A sleek, expensive leather briefcase swung at his side as a man entered the cell. It wasn't a defense attorney.
It was Ethan Carter.
Adrian stopped pacing, his eyes widening in a mixture of fury and desperate hope. He rushed toward the bars, grabbing the cold steel with both hands.
"Ethan! Thank God," Adrian babbled, his voice cracking with panic. "You have to help me. This is insane—your lawyers can fix this! We can spin a story, claim Ava had a psychotic break, say she fabricated the documents! You know how valuable my surgical grants are to the foundation!"
Ethan stopped a few feet away from the cell, his hands tucked neatly into the pockets of his dark overcoat. He looked at Adrian the way a scientist might look at a particularly revolting specimen under a microscope.
"You still don't get it, do you, Adrian?" Ethan said, his voice flat and devoid of warmth.
"Get what?!" Adrian shouted, spittle flying from his lips. "She's just an assistant! A replaceable nobody! You threw away a twenty-million-dollar medical partnership for a secretary?!"
"She is not a secretary," Ethan corrected coldly, stepping closer until the sheer weight of his presence made Adrian shrink back. "She is the only reason your sloppy research papers ever passed peer review. She is the intelligence behind your public success. And most importantly, she is a human being whose life you treated like your personal punching bag."
Adrian sneered, a pathetic, desperate attempt to reclaim his superiority. "You think you're some kind of white knight, Carter? She'll break your heart, too. Women like that are—"
Before Adrian could finish his vile sentence, Ethan raised his hand slightly, cutting him off with a single, devastating gesture.
"Your medical license was permanently revoked by the state medical board this morning," Ethan interrupted smoothly. "Your family's trust fund has frozen your assets to pay off civil restitution claims filed by your former patients. And by Friday, the federal prosecutor is adding wire fraud and tax evasion charges for those fake hospital grants you embezzled from."
Adrian stumbled backward, his knees buckling until he slumped against the concrete wall of the cell, clutching his head in sheer disbelief. "No... no, that's impossible. I'm Adrian Vaughn. I'm untouchable."

"You were never untouchable, Adrian," Ethan said quietly, turning on his heel. "You were just hiding behind a white coat. Enjoy the dark."
Ethan walked out of the cell block without looking back, leaving the fallen doctor alone with the wreckage of his own arrogance.
