Chapter 2 - The Confrontation on the MarbleThe grand double staircase of the Ferrara mansion descended into a soaring marble foyer illuminated by a massive crystal chandelier.

Standing at the base of the stairs, flanked by four nervous private security guards holding drawn handguns, was my father, Edmund Ashford. He wore a rumpled wool coat, his hair messy, his face pale, sweaty, and contorted into a mask of wild, frantic desperation.
Surrounding him in a dark, impenetrable semicircle were twelve of Nico’s primary enforcers, their suppressed automatic rifles raised, waiting for a single command to turn Edmund and his guards into red dust.
Nico walked down the curved marble stairs with slow, fluid, and terrifying grace. I walked two steps behind his right shoulder, wrapped securely in his heavy wool coat over my silk slip, my head held high, my hazel eyes locked onto the man who had sold me for eight million dollars.
When Edmund saw me walking beside Nico—unharmed, protected, and standing tall—his jaw sagged open in total, horror-stricken shock.
"Nora...!" Edmund stammered, stepping forward, his hands shaking as he pointed a finger at me. "Nora, baby! What did you tell him?! Tell him you're confused! Tell him you're having one of your episodes!"
Nico stopped at the bottom step, stepping directly between my father and me, his tall frame casting a long, intimidating shadow over the marble floor.
"She told me about the rose garden behind the gazebo in Westchester, Edmund," Nico spoke.
Every word dropped into the quiet foyer like a slab of cold granite.
Edmund’s four security guards froze. They looked from Nico’s deadly, calm face to Edmund’s pale, sweating forehead, their arms slowly dropping as they realized the suicidal nature of the job they had accepted.
"That's a lie!" Edmund shrieked, his voice cracking into a high, pathetic squeak. "She was a child! She was sick! She fell down the stairs and ruined her own back! Ask her about her scars, Nico! She's self-destructive! She made up the whole story because she hates me!"
Nico didn't draw his weapon. He took two slow, deliberate steps toward Edmund, stopping three inches from his face.
Nico reached out, his long, broad fingers gently picking up the lapel of Edmund’s wool coat.
"I looked at her back ten minutes ago, Edmund," Nico whispered, his deep baritone carrying a freezing, lethal tone that made Edmund's knees buckle. "I saw eleven years of leather belt buckles, iron rods, and cigarette burns. Those weren't self-inflicted marks. Those were the marks of a coward trying to beat a twelve-year-old child into silence."
Edmund let out a choked, terrified gasp, staggering backward two paces. "Nico... please! We can make a deal! The eight million... I have the cash! I can wire it to your offshore accounts in Zurich right now!"
"My Uncle Thomas’s life wasn't worth eight million dollars, Edmund," Nico said deadpan. "And my wife’s tears aren't for sale."
Nico raised his hand, gesturing to his chief lieutenant, Leo.
"Take Edmund and his guards to the lower holding cells at Pier 14," Nico commanded flatly. "Lock them in the dark until our forensic teams clear the soil beneath the gazebo in Westchester."
"NO! NICO! PLEASE! SHE'S NOT EVEN MY REAL DAUGHTER!" Edmund shrieked as six broad-shouldered operators tackled him flat onto the marble floor, slapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with a sharp, iron CLICK.
The heavy double doors closed behind Edmund’s groveling screams, leaving the foyer in a quiet, breathless silence.

Nico turned around slowly, walking back to where I stood on the stairs. He reached out, his broad hands taking mine into his warm palms, looking up into my face with storm-gray eyes that held zero malice, zero hesitation, and an absolute vow of protection.
"He's never touching you again, Nora," Nico promised into the quiet air.
