Chapter 1 - The Truth Beneath the SilkThe echo of Edmund Ashford’s shriek rebounded off the cold marble of the grand foyer below, cutting through the heavy silence of the master suite like a rusty blade.

"DON'T BELIEVE HER! SHE DOESN'T KNOW WHO SHE REALLY IS!"
Nico Ferrara didn't move. Standing six-foot-three in his dark wedding tuxedo, his broad shoulders squared against the dimly lit room, his storm-gray eyes remained locked onto my face.
The velvet blanket he had draped over my trembling, scar-laden shoulders felt warm against my skin, but inside, my blood ran like liquid ice. For eleven years, I had carried the phantom weight of my father's iron fist—the silent, bleeding survivor of a house that was never a home.
"Nora," Nico spoke. His baritone was low, smooth, and laced with an icy, dangerous precision that made the hair on my arms stand up. "What is he talking about?"
"The man he killed eleven years ago," I whispered, my voice shaking so hard my teeth chattered. "In the study of our estate in Westchester. It was a rainy Tuesday night. I was twelve. I heard shouting, and when I opened the door, I saw my father holding a heavy bronze statuette over a man's broken body."
Nico took a single step toward me, his broad hands coming up to gently frame my jawline, his thumb stroking my pale cheekbone with an unexpected, agonizing tenderness that contradicted every terrifying story I had ever heard about him.
"Who was the man, Nora?" Nico asked quietly.
"He called him Thomas," I choked out, a hot tear spilling over my lash, burning against my skin. "Thomas Ferrara. He had a silver signet ring with a lion's head engraved on the seal."
Nico froze.
His pupils dilated in absolute, horrifying shock. His grip on my jaw tightened for half a second before his hands dropped to his sides, his broad chest heaving as he stared at me as if the universe had just shattered at his feet.
"Thomas Ferrara..." Nico breathed, his voice cracking into a rough, raspy whisper. "My uncle. The Don who vanished in 2015. We spent eleven years searching for his body. We believed he fled to Italy with sixty million in syndicate assets."
"He didn't go to Italy, Nico," I wept softly, clutching the blanket against my collarbone, exposing the thick, jagged scar running across my left shoulder blade—the scar Edmund had given me with his leather belt the night he caught me weeping over Uncle Thomas's body. "He's buried beneath the rose garden behind the old gazebo in Westchester."
Downstairs, the sound of heavy mahogany doors splintering echoed through the mansion.
"NICO!" Edmund screamed again, his voice shrill with a frantic, apocalyptic panic. "BRING MY DAUGHTER DOWN! SHE'S A LIAR! SHE'S CRAZY! I'LL GIVE YOU TWENTY MILLION! JUST HAND HER OVER!"
Nico turned his head slowly toward the bedroom door. The vulnerability that had filled his storm-gray eyes vanished instantly, replaced by a dark, lethal, and absolute fury that turned the air in the room thick with the scent of impending bloodshed.

He reached inside his tuxedo jacket, unholstered his matte-black sidearm, and checked the secondary magazine with a sharp, mechanical CLICK.
"Stay behind me, Nora," Nico commanded softly, holding out his broad hand to pull me up from the edge of the bed. "Your father thinks he brought a victim to my chapel tonight. He has no idea he just handed me his executioner."
