Chapter 6 - The Trial of the CenturyThe federal courthouse downtown was surrounded by a dense, swirling sea of reporters, camera crews, and financial journalists when my car pulled up to the private security entrance for Sterling’s formal arraignment and bail hearing.

Flashbulbs popped like lightning storms against the tinted glass of the black SUV. My security detail formed a protective human shield around me as I stepped out onto the concrete steps, my posture steady, unyielding, and entirely composed. I wore dark sunglasses and a sharp woolen overcoat, walking with the quiet, devastating authority of someone who owned the very ground she stood on.

Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was thick with electric tension.

Federal Judge Patricia Vance sat behind the high mahogany bench, her expression stern, cold, and utterly unforgiving.

In the defendant’s box sat Sterling Cross and Beatrice Hayes. They wore standard orange county prison jumpsuits, their hands cuffed to heavy steel belly chains, their hair uncombed and dull. The golden boy of high society and his glamorous mistress had been completely stripped of their illusions.

When Sterling raised his head and saw me walking down the center aisle toward the front row, his eyes widened with raw, desperate fury. He half-rose from his seat, straining against his restraints, as if he wanted to scream across the courtroom.

A federal marshal shoved him back down into his chair with a sharp, metallic clatter.

Judge Patricia Vance banged her gavel once. The courtroom fell into absolute silence.

"We are here today for the formal arraignment and bail review in the matter of United States v. Sterling Cross and Beatrice Hayes," the judge announced, her voice echoing off the stone walls. "The court has reviewed the exhaustive federal indictments detailing conspiracy to commit murder, wire fraud, embezzlement, and evidence tampering."

She looked down from the bench, fixing her piercing gaze directly on Sterling.

"Mr. Cross, you occupied a position of immense trust, luxury, and privilege," Judge Vance continued, her tone dropping into a cold indictment. "You systematically looted a multi-billion-dollar enterprise, betrayed your fiduciary duties, and orchestrated a premeditated attempt on the life of your wife using fabricated staging and malicious deception."

Sterling stared at the floor, trembling violently, his previous arrogance entirely evaporated.

"Given the overwhelming evidence—including high-definition master server surveillance footage and authenticated audio recordings—bail is formally denied," the judge declared. "Both defendants are remanded to federal custody without bond pending trial."

Bang.

The gavel struck the wood with the finality of a guillotine blade.

As the marshals hoisted Sterling and Beatrice to their feet to lead them back to the holding cells, Sterling turned his head desperately toward me one last time, tears of sheer rage streaming down his face.

"Julianna! Please!" he choked out, his voice cracking. "Remember our history! Remember the years we spent building this life! Don't let them bury me!"

I looked straight into his eyes. There was no anger left in my heart, no hatred, and no sorrow. There was only absolute emptiness where he used to matter.

"You chose your path, Sterling," I said quietly, loud enough for him to hear over the murmurs of the courtroom. "Enjoy the cell."
