Chapter 3 - The Web of DeceitThe grand foyer suddenly felt less like a magnificent estate and more like a cage.

Sterling took a half-step back, his eyes darting frantically between Beatrice—who was still sprawled across the white tiles looking utterly bewildered—and Julianna, who stood tall and unyielding beside the staircase.

"Julianna... what is this?" Sterling demanded, though his voice lacked its former commanding authority. "You... you weren't pushed? You're not injured?"

"Injured? Heavens, no," Julianna laughed—a sharp, mirthless sound that sent a chill straight down Sterling’s spine. She reached up, casually peeling away a small, cleverly molded prosthetic latex pad from the side of her temple that had been oozing theatrical stage blood. She tossed the crimson-stained rubber onto the floor with a soft flick of her wrist. "Do you really take me for a fool, Sterling? Did you honestly think after five years of marriage to a corporate shark like you, I wouldn't have spyware installed on your private devices, bug your office, and monitor every single transaction you made with your little mistress?"

Beatrice scrambled to her feet, her face flushed with humiliation and confusion. She looked from Julianna to Sterling, her voice trembling with betrayal. "Sterling! You told me she was completely oblivious! You said she trusted you blindly!"

"Shut up, you absolute idiot!" Sterling roared at Beatrice, his composure finally shattering completely as he realized the catastrophic depth of the trap they had walked into. He turned his venomous gaze back to his wife. "You recorded us. You knew about the affair all along."

"I knew about the affair the week it started, darling," Julianna smiled, walking slowly toward the console table where the landline phone sat resting beside a stack of mail. "I just needed to let you hang yourselves with enough rope. And thanks to your brilliant idea of staging an 'accidental fall' down the grand staircase to collect my multi-million-dollar life insurance policy... you've provided the state prosecutor with everything he could possibly ask for."

Julianna picked up the heavy brass handset, her fingers moving with absolute calm. She pressed a single speed-dial button.

"Yes, Julian," Julianna said clearly into the receiver. "The trap has been sprung. The audio and video files have been automatically synced to the cloud server, and the local backup has already been dispatched to the district attorney's office. You can send the marshals in now."

Sterling lunged forward like a cornered animal, diving across the foyer to snatch the phone from her hand, but he was too late. Julianna sidestepped him with effortless grace, slamming the heavy brass receiver back onto its cradle with a sharp, echoing clack.

Before Sterling could lunge at her again, the heavy oak front doors of the estate burst open.

Four armed federal marshals in tactical gear poured into the grand foyer, their boots thundering against the pristine white tiles, their hands resting firmly on the holstered sidearms at their hips.

"Federal Marshals! Nobody move!" shouted the lead officer, his voice ringing out with absolute authority.

Sterling froze mid-stride, his arms outstretched, his chest heaving as reality crashed down upon him. Beatrice let out a piercing, hysterical shriek and collapsed back onto the floor, pulling her knees up to her chest as the steel handcuffs were swiftly slapped around Sterling’s wrists.

"Sterling Cross and Beatrice Hayes," the marshal announced coldly, reading from a warrant he pulled from his tactical vest. "You are formally placed under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, insurance fraud, and corporate espionage. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
