Chapter 2 - The Logic of the Master ServerThe silence that settled over the grand foyer was heavier than the marble pillars holding up the ceiling.

Sterling didn't yell. He didn't curse. He simply stood there, towering over the two women, his expression hardening into a mask of cold, terrifying calculation. He slowly reached into his inner jacket pocket, pulled out his sleek, dark-gray smartphone, and swiped across the screen.

Beatrice scrambled backward across the slick white tiles, her crimson dress rustling loudly in the quiet space. Her voice lost its theatrical polish, turning into a high-pitched, frantic whisper.

"Sterling... wait. Don't be ridiculous," Beatrice stammered, her fingers clawing frantically at the hem of her gown as she tried to stand. "You can't seriously believe that stupid camera recorded anything useful! The angle is completely wrong! It only covers the hallway, not the stairs!"

"The dome camera on the east gallery has a one-hundred-and-eighty-degree wide-angle lens, Beatrice," Sterling said, his voice dangerously low, stripped of every ounce of warmth they had shared over the past six months of their secret affair. "It captures every inch of the upper landing, the stairwell curve, and every downward step. It even records multi-channel spatial audio."

Julianna groaned again from the floor, her voice weak but cutting through the tension like a razor. "He... he knows... Sterling, check the server. She pushed me. She whispered... she whispered that the estate would be hers."

"Shut your mouth!" Beatrice shrieked, lunging forward as if to physically silence Julianna, her fingernails clawing toward the gold dress.

Sterling moved with lightning speed. He grabbed Beatrice firmly by the wrist, jerking her backward with enough force to send her sprawling onto her back against the cold tiles. She let out a sharp gasp of shock, staring up at him with wide, terrified eyes.

"Touch her again," Sterling whispered, leaning down so his face was inches from hers, "and I won't just let the police review the security footage. I’ll make sure you spend the next ten years wearing an orange jumpsuit in a maximum-security penitentiary."

Sterling tapped his phone screen, activating the remote administrative link to the estate’s secure local network. A digital progress bar popped up on his display: Connecting to Master Server... Accessing Archive: Camera_East_Foyer_04...

"No..." Beatrice whispered, shaking her head frantically as hot tears finally spilled over her cheeks, real and desperate this time. "Sterling, please! We planned this together! You said you wanted Julianna out of the picture so we could secure the merger! You can't pin this all on me!"

Sterling froze. His finger hovered just above the screen, and slowly, he turned his head to look down at Beatrice. The color didn't just drain from his face this time—it felt as though the air had been entirely sucked out of the room.

From the shadows of the arched doorway leading into the drawing-room, a slow, deliberate round of applause echoed softly.

Step by measured step, Julianna pushed herself up from the bloody marble floor. The weak, trembling victim who had been gasping for air just moments ago stood up straight, brushing off the gold silk of her dress with effortless grace. There was no sign of a concussion, no haze of pain in her sharp, piercing eyes.

Julianna looked down at Beatrice, then across at Sterling, a cold, triumphant smile playing across her lips.

"Well acted, Sterling," Julianna said, her voice dripping with venomous sarcasm. "Truly, an Academy Award-winning performance of shock and betrayal. But you almost ruined the best part by pausing too soon."

Sterling stared at Julianna, his phone still clutched in his shaking hand, the reality of the trap closing in around him with terrifying precision.
