Chapter 4 - The Digital ConfessionBy 2:00 AM, the grand foyer of the Whitaker Estate had been cleared of federal agents, forensic technicians, and weeping mistresses. The blood-stained marble tiles had been scrubbed clean, leaving behind only the chilling memory of a marriage built on lies, greed, and premeditated murder.

I sat comfortably in my grandfather’s oversized leather armchair in the second-floor master study, nursing a cup of warm, black coffee while watching the live security feed from the holding cells downtown flicker across my dual computer monitors.
In Holding Cell A, Sterling Cross sat hunched over a stainless-steel table, his expensive tuxedo rumpled and stained, his hands handcuffed to a bolted metal ring. Across from him sat two federal investigators sliding a thick, black binder filled with high-definition photographic stills and printed transcripts across the table.
I didn't need audio to know what they were saying. I could read the panic etched into every line of Sterling’s face as he stared at the digital proof of his own undoing.
The security camera on the east gallery hadn't just recorded the struggle on the stairs; it had captured the crystal-clear audio of Sterling and Beatrice meeting in the private garden three nights prior, plotting the exact method of my "accidental" demise, discussing how they would split my family's multi-million-dollar medical trust, and laughing about how easy it would be to fool the coroner.
My phone buzzed against the mahogany desk.
Call from: Julian Vance (General Counsel).
I swiped the screen and pressed accept immediately.
"Julian. Tell me the prosecutors have everything they need," I said, my voice steady, calm, and completely devoid of emotion.
"They have more than they need, Julian replied on the other end, sounding thoroughly pleased. "The digital footprint is airtight. Between the cloud-synced audio files from the garden, the financial paper trail moving embezzled corporate funds into Beatrice’s offshore accounts, and the high-definition video of the staged accident tonight... neither Sterling nor Beatrice will ever see the outside of a federal penitentiary for the next thirty years. Their defense attorneys tried to file an emergency injunction, but the judge took one look at the master server footage and threw it out of court."
"Good," I murmured, taking a slow sip of my coffee. "Make sure the board of directors convenes at 8:00 AM sharp. I want Sterling’s voting shares stripped and reassigned to the primary family trust before the stock market opens."
"Already scheduled," Julian confirmed. "The board is fully behind you, Julianna. Your father would have been proud of how you handled this coup."

"My father built this empire on trust, Julian," I replied, looking out the arched window toward the dark, quiet expanse of the estate gardens. "Sterling thought he could inherit it by destroying the foundation. He learned the hard way that you never underestimate a Whitaker."
After ending the call, I locked my computer screen and leaned back in the leather chair, letting out a long, steady breath. The storm had finally broken. The parasites who had sought to bleed my family’s legacy dry were safely locked behind steel bars, and the house was finally clean.
