Chapter 5 - The Heir to an EmpireThe silence in the study became absolute.

Dante’s gaze remained locked on my stomach, his breathing stopping entirely. The man who had faced down federal indictments, syndicate hits, and rival mob bosses looked as though he had just been struck by lightning.
"Lena..." he whispered, his voice barely audible, shaking with a terrifying, fragile hope. "Are you...?"
"Pregnant," I finished for him, my voice completely devoid of warmth. "Five months along, Dante. Conceived right around the time you were busy juggling your syndicate accounts and your mistress."
Dante staggered forward, his hands trembling as he reached out toward me, desperate to touch my stomach. "A baby... we're having a baby?"
"Don't," I snapped, stepping back out of his reach. My tone was like jagged glass. "Don't you dare touch me. And don't you dare call this our baby."
Dante stopped dead in his tracks, his hands hovering in mid-air before slowly dropping to his sides. Pain flashed across his rugged features, raw and unfiltered. "Lena, please... how can you say that? It's my child. I'm the father."
"Are you?" I challenged, tilting my chin up, unleashing the devastating truth I had carried like a secret weapon since my visit to Dr. Vance.
Dante frowned, his brow furrowing in deep confusion. "What are you talking about? Of course I'm the father. Who else could—"
"Dr. Vance discovered something interesting during my last ultrasound," I interrupted smoothly, watching every color drain from his face. "Medical science is fascinating, Dante. It turns out I'm not just pregnant. I'm carrying twins."
Dante blinked, trying to process the rapid-fire information. "Twins? Lena, that's... that's incredible. But why are you looking at me like that?"
"Because of the timeline," I said, my voice dropping into an icy, clinical register. "The first baby was conceived around our anniversary. But the second baby—the second baby's cellular development indicates it was conceived three weeks earlier. Right around the time you spent four days locked away in your Lake Geneva estate negotiating with the Sicilian syndicate."
I paused, letting the heavy, suffocating silence fill the room.
"Except, Dante... the Sicilian syndicate leaders weren't the only ones staying at that estate, were they? Security footage from the private villa shows Sofia Vale arriving twenty minutes after your helicopter landed. You didn't spend four days negotiating territory, Dante. You spent four days with your mistress."
Dante looked as though he had been physically struck across the face. He staggered back, crashing heavily against the edge of his mahogany desk, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps.
"Lena... no," he choked out, panic tearing through his voice. "I swear to God, I didn't touch Sofia during those four days in Lake Geneva. She was there for corporate logistics, she stayed in the guest wing—"
"Spare me," I spat, cutting him off. "You lied to me for five years, Dante. You lied about your meetings, you lied about your loyalty, and you lied about your heart. Why should I believe a single word coming out of your mouth now?"
"Because you're my wife!" he roared, the primal, possessive mafia boss finally breaking through the shell of his despair. He lunged forward, closing the distance between us, grabbing my upper arms with a grip that was firm but desperate. "You are my wife, and those are my children! You think I would ever let another man touch what belongs to me? You think I would risk losing you for a passing convenience? I was a fool, Lena—blind, arrogant, and drowning in a world that was chewing me alive—but I never stopped loving you!"
"Your love is a cage, Dante," I whispered, tears finally stinging my eyes, though I refused to let them fall. "And I'm done living inside it."
Before he could answer, the heavy front door of the townhouse crashed open with a violent bang.
"FBI! Federal warrant! Nobody move!"
Heavy boots echoed down the hallway like rolling thunder.
Dante’s head snapped toward the doorway. The federal net had finally closed. His empire was gone, his assets were frozen, and now, federal agents were storming his private home to arrest him for racketeering.
Dante looked back down at me, his dark eyes wild with a desperate, heartbreaking realization. He knew he was going away for a very, very long time.
"Run," Dante whispered urgently, pressing a heavy, cold metal key into my hand. "The private exit behind the study leads to the underground parking garage. My personal car is there—keys in the ignition, completely untraceable. Take it. Go."
"Dante..." I stared down at the key in my hand, stunned.
"I lost my empire, and I lost my wife," Dante said, his voice breaking as the heavy boots of federal agents reached the end of the hallway. "I won't lose my children too. Go, Lena. Save yourself from me."
May you like
Before I could answer, the study doors burst open, and three agents in tactical gear flooded the room, shouting orders and forcing Dante to his knees.
I didn't look back. I turned, gripped the key, and disappeared into the shadows of the secret exit.
