Chapter 2 - The Ghost of Michigan AvenueThe wind off Lake Michigan whipped through the canyons of downtown Chicago, biting through my wool coat as I ducked into the anonymous lobby of a mid-tier law firm three miles away from Dante's skyscraper.

For ten days, I had lived out of a single suitcase in a modest studio apartment in Evanston, using burner phones and paying cash for groceries. I had severed all ties with my past life, abandoning my credit cards, my social media, and every luxury Dante’s wealth had ever bought me. I wanted nothing of his.

Except the truth. And justice.

Sitting across a scarred mahogany desk in a dimly lit back office was Marcus Vance—no relation to my OB-GYN, but a disgraced former federal prosecutor who now made a very lucrative living helping wealthy women vanish from the radar of abusive, hyper-powerful husbands.

"You're asking for a lot, Lena," Marcus said, sliding a thick dossier across the table. Inside were photocopies of corporate filings, shell company charters, and land deeds. "Dante Moretti isn't just a businessman. He’s the head of the Chicago Commission. If we pull this trigger, there's no going back. You'll be waging financial warfare against a man who disposes of federal agents for breakfast."

I opened the folder, my eyes scanning the ledger entries. "I'm not asking you to take him down with a pistol, Marcus. I want to take him down with math."

Marcus raised an eyebrow, leaning back in his squeaky leather chair. "Explain."

"For five years, Dante let me manage the auxiliary ledgers of Moretti Shipping and Logistics," I said, my voice steady, carrying the cold precision of a woman who had nothing left to lose. "He thought I was just his dutiful little wife keeping track of petty cash and catering bills. He didn't realize that every shell company he used to funnel syndicate money through international ports left a digital footprint. I copied every single transaction onto an encrypted drive before I walked out that door."

Marcus stared at me for a long, quiet moment, a slow, appreciative smile spreading across his weathered face. "You downloaded his entire illicit empire's balance sheet."

"And more," I replied, pulling a small black flash drive from my pocket and setting it gently on top of the dossier. "I also found the paper trail linking Sofia Vale’s boutique architecture firm to millions of dollars in unwashed syndicate capital embezzled directly from Dante’s personal accounts. Sofia isn't just his mistress, Marcus. She’s his liability. And Dante doesn't know she’s been skimming from him behind his back."

Marcus whistled softly, picking up the flash drive as if it were a live grenade. "If this is real... you didn't just bring a knife to a gunfight, Lena. You brought a nuclear launch code."

"Dante built his entire life on control," I said, standing up and buttoning my coat. "He thought he could control his business, control his mistresses, and control a wife who stood quietly in the corner. Now, I'm going to show him what happens when his portfolio collapses."

"What's your next move?" Marcus asked, standing up with me.

"I'm going back to the Gold Coast," I said quietly.

Marcus frowned. "Are you insane? If Dante's men spot you—"

"They won't spot me," I interrupted, a dark, dangerous smile touching my lips. "Because tonight is the annual Chicago Symphony Gala at the Drake Hotel. Dante will be there, surrounded by politicians, judges, and rival bosses. And Sofia will be on his arm."

I tapped the flash drive sitting in Marcus's hand.

"And by the time they finish their champagne toast, the federal grand jury will have every single file on that drive sitting in their inbox."
