Chapter 3 - Velvet and VengeanceThe grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel glittered under ten thousand crystal drops, echoing with the polite laughter of Chicago’s elite. String quartets played softly from the balcony, while waiters in starched white jackets wove through the crowd carrying trays of Dom Pérignon.

I stood near the shadow of a marble pillar on the mezzanine level, clad in a backless emerald-green silk gown that hugged my changing body with quiet elegance. My dark hair was swept up into a severe French twist, and a velvet mask shielded the upper half of my face—part of the masquerade theme of the evening, but more importantly, my shield against recognition.
From my vantage point, I had a clear view of the VIP floor below.
And there he was.
Dante Moretti stood beside the grand staircase, looking every bit the ruthless monarch of the Midwest. His tailored charcoal tuxedo fit his broad shoulders to perfection, his dark hair slicked back, his jaw set in that familiar, unyielding line of absolute authority.
Beside him stood Sofia Vale, draped in a blinding white Dior gown dripping with diamonds that undoubtedly belonged to Moretti family vaults. She laughed at something Dante said, her hand resting familiarly against the lapel of his jacket—the exact spot where her perfume used to linger, driving me insane with doubt.
Watching them now, I didn't feel the burning agony of betrayal. That pain had long since cauterized, replaced by a cold, beautiful numbness.
My hand drifted down instinctively, resting flat against my lower abdomen. Beneath the silk gown, my body was changing. Two heartbeats were growing inside me, fueled by my survival and anchored by a secret Dante couldn't buy, bully, or steal his way out of.
Just a little longer, I whispered silently to the babies. Let Mama finish her work.
At 8:45 PM, my burner phone vibrated discreetly against my thigh.
I pulled it out. A single text message from Marcus: Files delivered to the DOJ and IRS strike force. Distributed to local press outlets. Public drop scheduled for 9:00 PM.
I looked down at the ballroom floor.
On cue, the massive projection screens flanking the stage—normally reserved for displaying charity donation totals—flickered violently. The classical music stuttered and died.
A murmur rippled through the crowd as the screen shifted from a corporate logo to a stark, undeniable document header: UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT – GRAND JURY SUBPOENA / MORETTI LOGISTICS AUDIT TRAIL.
Below it scrolled itemized lists of offshore accounts, tax evasion schemes, shell company registries in the Cayman Islands, and wire transfers explicitly linking Moretti Holdings to federal racketeering charges.
And right at the bottom, highlighted in bold red text: EMBEZZLEMENT OF SYNDICATE FUNDS BY SOFIA VALE.
The room erupted into absolute, deafening chaos.
Down below, glasses dropped and shattered against the marble floor. Politicians turned pale, scrambling for the exits. Rival mob bosses stood up abruptly, their eyes darting toward Dante with sudden, lethal hostility.
I watched Dante’s reaction from the mezzanine.
In a fraction of a second, the mask of cold, untouchable composure vanished. His dark eyes swept across the ballroom, landing on the giant screens, and for the first time in the five years I had known him, Dante Moretti looked genuinely, terrifyingly lost.
He didn't look at Sofia. He didn't look at the panicked crowd.
With instinctual, predatory precision, Dante’s head snapped upward—straight toward the mezzanine where I stood in the shadows.
Our eyes locked across the crowded room.

Even through the velvet mask and the dim lighting, the electric shock of recognition hit him like a physical blow. He knew. Without a single word being spoken, Dante knew exactly who had dismantled his entire empire in four seconds flat.
I gave him a slow, mocking smile, raised my champagne flute in a silent toast, and turned gracefully toward the exit.
