Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Filing CabinetBy 8:00 PM, a heavy autumn rain fell over Chicago, tapping softly against the high arched windows of my father’s old brick townhouse in Hyde Park.

Three armored black SUVs guarded the quiet residential street. Inside the sunlit, warm study, my father's heavy oak desk stood exactly as he had left it six years ago.

Beside the desk stood the worn, olive-green steel filing cabinet Grant Whitaker had tried so hard to get me to throw away.

I stood before it, my fingers trembling slightly as I raised the completed silver compass. I aligned the raised ridges on the back of the pendant with the keyhole concealed behind the rusted manufacturer's badge on the top drawer.

CLICK. MECHANIZED HUM.

A heavy steel false back inside the bottom drawer slid open smoothly, revealing a velvet-lined compartment containing three thick, yellowed leather ledgers bound by red wax seals:

THE MARLOWE MARITIME TITLE: Certified 1996 legal deeds proving Walter Marlowe held forty percent common stock equity in the South Chicago Commercial Pier, valued at over $220 million.

THE MEDICAL FORENSIC REPORT: A sealed toxicology report from a private Swiss laboratory confirming Walter Marlowe’s blood contained lethal doses of synthetic arsenic—administered three weeks before his death.

THE WHITAKER EMBEZZLEMENT LOG: Detailed bank registries documenting Richard Whitaker stealing $45 million from the Marlowe trust to fund Grant’s lavish lifestyle and failed software ventures.

I collapsed into the leather office chair, covering my face with my hands as quiet, ragged sobs shook my shoulders.

"They killed him..." I wept, my chest heaving. "They poisoned my father and then sent Grant to make me fall in love with him so I'd sign away his legacy!"

Vincent knelt flat on the floorboards beside my chair. He didn't offer empty platitudes; his large, warm, calloused hands gently clasped mine, anchoring my trembling frame against his solid, unshakeable presence.

"They took your past, Tessa," Vincent swore softly, his gray eyes burning with an absolute, apocalyptic fire. "But they will not touch your future, or your baby’s future. Senior Managing Partner Bridget Colton is filing the emergency asset freezes right now."

I looked down at our joined hands, feeling an overwhelming, weightless sense of safety I hadn't felt since my father passed away.

"What happens to Grant and his father?" I whispered.

A cold, lethal smile touched Vincent’s lips. "Tomorrow, we take back what belongs to you."
