Chapter 1 - The Secret Inside the CompassThe low hum of the supermarket refrigeration units faded into absolute silence as Vincent Rossi stood before me in the central aisle. The thirty-six-year-old mafia Don—a man whose dark tailored suit, sharp jawline, and piercing slate-gray eyes commanded instant obedience across Chicago’s underground—held out his hand.

In his broad, calloused palm lay a silver half-circle carved with delicate nautical lines. When he brought it toward my neck, the piece magnetically snapped against my father’s pendant with a quiet, resonant click.
The two halves fused together into a complete, unbroken silver compass.
A sharp gasp escaped my lips. My hand instinctively covered the pendant, feeling a subtle raised latch along its outer edge that had been completely invisible until the second half joined it.
"Your father didn't die from an accidental medication overdose, Tessa," Vincent whispered, his low baritone calm, grounded, and laced with an icy, lethal intensity. "Walter Marlowe was murdered by Grant’s father, Richard Whitaker."
My stomach plummeted into a cold, bottomless abyss. Tears burned behind my eyes as the crushing weight of six years of unanswered questions crashed down on me at once.
"My father... was murdered?!" I choked out, my voice trembling as my hand rested protectively over my five-month pregnant belly. "Why?! He was an independent maritime archivist! He had nothing to do with high-finance real estate!"
Vincent stepped closer, his broad six-foot-three frame forming an impenetrable shield between me and the staring shoppers.
"Walter was an archivist for the Marlowe Shipping Trust," Vincent revealed, his thumb gently catching a stray tear on my cheek before pulling his hand back with respectful restraint. "Thirty years ago, your grandfather established a hidden corporate registry that placed a forty percent controlling equity over the entire South Chicago Commercial Pier in your name. Richard Whitaker spent six years using Grant to court you, trying to find the original title deeds before you reached your twenty-eighth birthday."
I stared at him in utter, speech-bound shock. "The filing cabinet... Grant kept demanding I throw away Dad's old filing cabinet!"
"Inside that filing cabinet is a double-bottomed steel drawer," Vincent confirmed. "Which opens only when you insert the completed silver compass into its lock mechanism."
I looked into Vincent's slate-gray eyes, my pulse hammering in my ears. "And why did my father entrust the second half to you?"
A soft, rare warmth touched Vincent’s severe features.
"Because fifteen years ago, your father saved my life when rival cartels ambushed my family's docks," Vincent declared flatly. "I swore an oath on my family's honor to protect his daughter and his grandchild with everything I own."

He extended his arm, offering a steady, open palm.
"Grant Whitaker threw a hundred-dollar bill at your feet today because he thought you were weak," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a cold, absolute register. "Let's go open your father's vault and show him who truly owns this city."
