Chapter 1 - The Ash beneath the Little BodyguardThe heavy mahogany doors of my private office on the top floor of the Moretti Estate closed with a soft, ominous click that cut through the room like a drawn blade.

My name is Vincent Moretti. At thirty-eight, I stood six-foot-four, built like a wall of solid granite, my broad chest and shoulders covered in dark, intricate ink, my face carved with a razor-sharp jawline and storm-gray eyes that dropped the temperature of any room to absolute zero. I commanded the Midwest Syndicate—a four-billion-dollar empire of commercial shipping berths, private logistics terminals, and underground enforcement networks across Chicago, Detroit, and Boston. Powerful men who controlled street crews and corporate boardrooms alike lowered their eyes when I entered a room.

Yet standing behind my executive desk, looking down at my forty-two-year-old security chief, Dominic Cole, my gray eyes burned with an apocalyptic, diamond-hard fury.

Dominic had been my closest confidant for ten years. He had stood beside me during turf wars, managed my personal security, and held the master keys to every room in my mansion.

Beside him stood thirty-two-year-old Rosa Delgado, my live-in maid of two years, weeping silent, terrified tears as she clutched her worn apron. And standing right beside Rosa, wearing her oversized black suit jacket, her crooked red bow, and her plastic earpiece, was four-year-old Lily Delgado.

Lily didn't flinch under my severe gaze. Her little four-year-old hands were clenched into tiny fists, her dark hazel eyes shining with absolute, fearless conviction.

"He's lying," Lily repeated, her voice small but clear, cutting through the heavy silence of the office. "I saw him put the watch in Mommy's apron pocket when she was folding the dining room linens."

Dominic Cole forced a tight, polite smile, though a muscle in his jaw twitched violently.

"Boss," Dominic spoke smoothly, taking a half-step toward my desk with his hands open in a disarming gesture. "The child is confused. She loves her mother and wants to protect her. I've served you for ten years. You know my loyalty."

I didn't answer right away. I slowly walked around my heavy mahogany desk, my heavy leather dress shoes stepping silently over the oriental rug, until my six-foot-four frame towered directly over Dominic.

I looked down at the gold lion signet ring on Dominic's right index finger—a custom ring I had gifted him five years ago for his service.

"Lily," I said softly, my voice dropping into a low, subsonic register of absolute authority. "Tell me about the ring."

Lily stepped forward, pointing her tiny finger straight at Dominic’s hand.

"When Mommy was folding towels by the linen cart, that bad man reached into his jacket," Lily explained, her little voice unwavering. "He had the gold shiny watch in his hand. When he pushed it into Mommy's apron, his big gold lion ring scratched the silver button on her apron strap. I saw it. The lion scratched the button!"

Rosa gasped, her hand flying to her left shoulder.

I reached out, my broad, calloused fingers gently inspecting the silver snap button on Rosa’s apron strap.

Scratched deep into the metallic surface was a fresh, distinct double-groove mark—matching the exact raised claws of the gold lion ring on Dominic’s finger.

Dominic’s face went paper-white.

The silence inside the office hit with hydraulic pressure.

"Dominic," I rasped out, every word falling like an iron block into the quiet room. "You have five seconds to tell me why my wife's watch was in Rosa's pocket before I break both your arms."

Dominic took two quick steps backward toward the door, his hand instinctively reaching toward his concealed hip holster.

BOOM!

Before Dominic’s fingers could even touch his weapon, the heavy oak doors of the office were thrown open with a violent impact!

Stepping into the room, flanked by four armed tactical operators from Vance Security, was Lieutenant Colonel Marcus Vance.

"Don Moretti," Marcus reported flatly, holding a satellite tablet displaying live security feeds and encrypted digital ledgers. "We just intercepted Dominic Cole’s private communications. He wasn't trying to steal your wife's watch, Don Moretti. He was planting it to fire Rosa so she wouldn't witness his men loading forty crates of unregistered electronic assets from your East Warehouse tonight."

Dominic turned terrified eyes toward the door.

I stepped in front of him, my broad hand closing around his collar like a vice, lifting his six-foot frame an inch off the floor, my gray eyes locking onto his with cold, lethal authority.

"Ten years of trust, Dominic," I growled deadpan. "And you got outsmarted by my four-year-old bodyguard."
