Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Traitor's EmpireBy 2:00 AM, the top-floor executive command suite at The Moretti Logistics Tower in downtown Chicago was operating under an impenetrable, non-negotiable tactical lockdown.

Outside the private elevator banks, twenty armed Vance Security operators in dark suits guarded every corridor. Inside the private executive rest suite, Rosa and little Lily were resting safely on a plush velvet sofa, wrapped in warm cashmere blankets, eating warm soup provided by my personal kitchen staff.

Lily sat holding her gray plush rabbit, her tiny feet dangling off the cushion, still wearing her crooked red bow proudly.

In the central executive study, sitting around a broad black granite conference table, were me, Senior Corporate Prosecutor Bridget Colton, Marcus Vance, and two federal forensic accounting experts.

Restrained in a heavy steel chair in the corner under the watchful eye of two armed operators was Dominic Cole.

Bridget Colton opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders, sliding digital ledgers, wiretap logs, and thermal surveillance footage flat onto the table before Dominic and me:

"Vincent, Rosa," Bridget spoke crisp and fast, her sharp blue eyes holding surgical professional fury. "The forensic audit into Dominic Cole, his corrupt associate Richard Sterling-Smith, and the Moretti Heritage Trust is complete."

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking Lake Michigan, my bespoke dark charcoal suit jacket off, my white dress shirt sleeves rolled up to reveal my tattooed forearms, a glass of untouched bourbon in my hand.

Bridget tapped the digital displays:

THE ONE-HUNDRED-FIFTY-MILLION-DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT: Certified banking registries proving Dominic Cole systematically diverted $150 million over four years from the Moretti Family Heritage Trust into Panamanian shell accounts co-owned by Richard Sterling-Smith.

THE FRAMING OF ROSA DELGADO: Intercepted wiretaps proving Dominic realized Rosa had accidentally overheard his late-night phone calls regarding the warehouse theft, prompting him to steal Isabella's gold watch to frame Rosa for grand larceny and have her arrested.

THE SOVEREIGN BLOODLINE CHARTER: Original probate deeds confirming that thirty-two-year-old Rosa Delgado was actually the rightful biological niece of Vincent’s late mentor, Matteo Delgado, making Rosa the legal forty percent common equity holder over the Moretti Maritime Fleet.

My jaw locked into solid granite.

I looked from the screens over to Rosa, who sat frozen in shock on the velvet sofa.

"Rosa," I spoke softly, my deep baritone carrying absolute clarity. "Your uncle Matteo left his equity share in a blind trust six years ago before he passed. Dominic hid your identity from me when you applied for the maid position so he could steal your family's dividend checks."

Rosa covered her face with her hands, tears of overwhelming shock and relief spilling through her fingers.

I walked across the room, dropping flat onto one knee right in front of little Lily and Rosa.

The feared Don who commanded Chicago’s underworld reached out, gently taking Rosa’s small hand in one palm and ruffling Lily’s dark curls with the other.

"They used my grief over Isabella to blind me for years, Rosa," I swore, my storm-gray eyes shining with genuine, humble devotion and diamond-hard protective resolve. "They thought a quiet mother and a four-year-old girl had no voice. Tomorrow morning at the Chicago Logistics Assembly... we show this city who really owns the Moretti dynasty."
