Chapter 6 - The Trial in Room 4BThree months after the night at the house, the final criminal trial took place inside Courtroom 4B of the State Supreme Court in downtown Chicago.

The public gallery was packed with over two hundred journalists, legal experts, and corporate leaders.
Carter Vance sat at the defense table wearing a dark orange county inmate jumpsuit, his broad frame bowed, his hands restrained by heavy steel waist chains. His former arrogant composure was completely shattered, replaced by a hollow, broken, and sunken appearance. Beside him sat Eleanor and Thomas Vance, both wearing matching prison jumpsuits, awaiting secondary sentencing.
Sitting at the prosecution table, flanked by Marcus Vance and my father, was me.
I wore an immaculate midnight-blue tailored suit, my dark hair swept back in a royal knot, my posture straight, my hazel eyes holding zero fear, zero bitterness, and zero weakness.
In my arms, wrapped in a soft white cashmere blanket, slept three-month-old Emily. She had made a full, miraculous recovery in the NICU, growing into a healthy, chubby, and beautiful baby girl whose bright hazel eyes sparkled with unbroken life.
The honorable Judge Marcus Vance presided over the bench, slamming his heavy wooden gavel flat onto the block.
SLAM!
"We are here for final sentencing in the matter of the State v. Carter Vance, Eleanor Vance, and Thomas Vance," Judge Vance declared, his baritone echoing through the silent room like a rolling wave of thunder. "The defendants have been found guilty on all counts: Felony Domestic Violence, Attempted Manslaughter of an Unborn Child, High Corporate Fraud, Witness Intimidation, and Obstruction of Justice."
Carter squeezed his eyes shut, a low, agonizing groan breaking from his throat.
"You treated a dedicated, loving woman like a servant because you believed her family was powerless," Judge Vance continued flatly. "You used violence and intimidation to suppress the truth. But truth is an unshakeable wall."
The judge raised his pen, signing the master sentencing documents:
CARTER VANCE: Sentenced to thirty-two years in a state maximum-security penitentiary without the possibility of early parole, alongside total financial forfeiture of all assets.
ELEANOR VANCE: Sentenced to fourteen years in a state facility for felony assault, accessory to domestic violence, and wire fraud.
THOMAS VANCE: Sentenced to eighteen years in federal custody for judicial corruption, bribery, and evidence tampering.
As court bailiffs stood up to drag Carter toward the side holding cell in chains, he turned his bloodshot, weeping eyes toward me, reaching out his chained hands in a desperate, groveling plea.
"Chloe... please!" Carter wept, his voice cracking into raw, pathetic sobs. "Forgive me... My God, Chloe, forgive me! Let me see my daughter... let me be her father!"
I looked down at the man groveling in chains with quiet, weightless sorrow.

"You had two years to be a husband, Carter," I spoke softly, my voice carrying cleanly across the silent courtroom. "And you had seven months to be a father. You chose the cruelty instead."
I slowly turned my back on him, walking out through the high brass doors of the courtroom into the bright spring sun, leaving him to spend the next thirty-two years in dark, cold silence.
