Chapter 3 - The Dark Ward at St. Jude'sThe sharp, rhythmic chimes of the fetal heart monitor inside Operating Room 4 at St. Jude's Private Medical Center sounded like a ticking time bomb.

I lay beneath the blinding surgical lights, surrounded by four chief obstetric surgeons, two anesthesiologists, and a team of neonatal specialists.

"Placental abruption," the chief surgeon announced sharply, his gloved hands moving with rapid, practiced precision. "We need to perform an emergency Cesarean section immediately! Prepare the blood bags!"

Through the small glass viewing window above the surgical suite, my father stood beside Marcus Vance, his hands clenched into tight fists inside his trench coat pockets, watching every second of the procedure.

For three agonizing hours, the medical team fought to save my life and the life of my unborn child.

At 3:15 AM, the sharp, muffled cry of a newborn baby girl echoed through the sterile operating room.

"We have a pulse!" the chief nurse gasped, gently lifting a tiny, three-pound infant toward the warming incubator. "She's small... she's severely premature... but she's breathing!"

Tears spilled freely down my cheeks beneath the oxygen mask as I heard my daughter's faint, beautiful cry. "Emily..." I choked out, using the name I had carried in my heart for seven months. "Her name is... Emily..."

In the hallway outside, the chief surgeon stepped out to meet my father, taking off his surgical mask.

"Mr. Sterling," the surgeon reported, his voice heavy with deep relief. "Your daughter suffered severe abdominal trauma and lost a dangerous amount of blood, but we managed to stabilize her uterus. Your granddaughter is currently in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit under twenty-four-hour observation. She is a fighter."

Harrison let out a long, shuddering breath, his chest heaving as he closed his eyes, offering a silent prayer of gratitude.

When he opened his eyes again, the soft, fatherly warmth vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, razor-sharp resolve that lit up the dimly lit hospital corridor.

He turned to Marcus Vance.

"Marcus," Harrison ordered flatly.

"Yes, Don Harrison?"

"Activate Phase One," Harrison commanded, his voice dropping into a low, lethal register. "Freeze every bank account registered to Vance & Associates. Revoke their commercial maritime operating licenses. And bring me everything on Chief Prosecutor Thomas Vance."

"It will be done before sunrise, sir," Marcus bowed.
