Chapter 1 - The Voice on the SpeakerphoneThe phone speaker crackled against the cold kitchen tile where Carter had tossed the shattered device. The sharp metallic smell of blood filled my nose as another wave of agonizing cramps ripped through my abdomen. Tears of sheer, desperate terror blurred my vision, but I kept my eyes locked on the broken screen.

Eleanor crossed her arms, a cruel, mocking smirk playing on her lips. "Call your little farmer father, Chloe. Let him know what a failure his daughter is."
Carter scoffed, stepping closer to nudge my leg with the toe of his polished leather shoe. "Go ahead. Let's see what a broke country bumpkin can do against the most formidable legal family in this county."
On the fourth ring, the call connected.
A deep, gravelly baritone answered. It wasn't the voice of an uneducated farmhand. It was a voice that possessed an absolute, bone-chilling authority—a voice that had commanded fleets, altered political elections, and made federal judges tread lightly for over three decades.
"Chloe?"
My breath hitched into a wet, painful sob. "Dad... please..."
"Where are you?" The voice dropped an octave, the temperature through the speaker seemingly plummeting into sub-zero territory. "What happened to your voice?"
"Carter... he hit me..." I gasped, gasping for air as blood continued to pool beneath my scrubs. "His mother pushed me into the granite counter... I'm bleeding, Dad... my baby... please help me..."
Silence stretched over the line for two agonizing seconds. It wasn't a shocked silence; it was the quiet before a catastrophic storm.
Carter burst into a loud, obnoxious laugh, leaning down toward the broken phone. "Listen here, old man! Your pathetic daughter is having a little dramatic episode! I'm Carter Vance, senior partner at Vance & Associates, and my uncle is Chief Prosecutor Thomas Vance! You tell your daughter to stop lying, or I'll have her arrested for domestic slander before sunrise!"
There was no stuttering, no confusion from the other end. Only the low, deliberate sound of a heavy brass pen being set flat onto a glass desk.
"Carter Vance," my father spoke softly. Every word was dropped like a block of cold granite. "My name is Harrison Sterling. Look at your wife's phone screen. Read the private satellite line number."
Carter's smug smile faltered for a fraction of a second. He squinted down at the glowing, cracked LCD display. Above the contact name was a green, encrypted federal routing code followed by a ten-digit private priority extension—an extension reserved exclusively for the Supreme Command of the Federal Maritime Security Division and Sterling Global Logistics.
"In four minutes," Harrison Sterling promised, his tone terrifyingly calm, "thirty tactical operators will breach your residence. If my daughter or my grandchild suffers permanent harm, there is no court, no prosecutor uncle, and no legal maneuver on this earth that will save you."
The line went dead with a sharp click.
Carter stared at the phone. For the first time in two years, a flicker of genuine, sweat-slicked panic crossed his eyes. "Harrison... Sterling? The... the shipping magnate?"

"Don't be ridiculous, Carter!" Eleanor snapped, though her own voice trembled slightly as she looked down at the blood spreading across the white kitchen tiles. "She's bluffing! Her father wears flannel and works in the dirt!"
Before Carter could answer, the roar of heavy engines echoed down our quiet suburban street.
