Chapter 2 - The Red Carpet of LiesThe Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of glittering crystal chandeliers, vintage champagne, and five hundred of the most powerful figures in North America.

Governors, federal judges, international shipping magnates, and sovereign wealth directors mingled beneath the gold-leaf ceilings, while a world-class orchestra played softly near the grand staircase.
Near the central champagne tower, Julian Moretti stood surrounded by four regional bank presidents and two senior city councilmen. He held a glass of vintage Dom Pérignon, his face flushed with arrogant satisfaction.
"I tell you, gentlemen," Julian boasted, his voice carrying easily over the clinking glasses, "Moretti Logistics is expanding into three major European deep-water ports by the end of Q4. The acquisition is seamless. Sterling Investment Group recognized our market dominance months ago."
Victoria Sterling leaned against his shoulder, her wine-red designer gown catching the light, a charming, practiced smile painted across her face. "Julian’s vision for the company has been extraordinary," she purred to the bankers. "He built this infrastructure from nothing—no family wealth, no hand-outs. Just pure grit and executive brilliance."
Evelyn and Chloe stood nearby, holding platefuls of caviar blinis, chatting loudly with a group of society columnists.
"Oh, Julian has always been a prodigy," Evelyn chimed in, adjusting her gold necklace. "Of course, it takes a proper family structure to support a man of his caliber. We’ve had to cut away certain... domestic distractions recently, but as you can see, Julian is finally surrounded by people who measure up to his standard."
Chloe snickered, waving her phone. "Honestly, some people are born to sit in a kitchen, and some people are born for the red carpet. You can't turn a house cat into a lion."
Suddenly, the ambient chatter of five hundred elite guests began to drop into a quiet, stunned hush near the main entrance.
The heavy mahogany double doors of the ballroom swung open.
Four broad-shouldered security officers dressed in immaculate dark suits stepped into the hall, clearing a wide, unobstructed path through the crowd. Behind them walked Arthur Vance—the universally feared Chief Executive Vice President of Sterling Investment Group.
And walking beside Arthur, her hand resting gracefully on his arm, was a woman.
She wore a midnight-black silk gown that swept the floor with liquid grace. Around her neck rested the world-famous forty-carat black diamond necklace. She moved with an unshakeable, royal authority that commanded every eye in the room to freeze.
Julian turned his head casually, expecting to see a visiting foreign dignitary or a federal senator.
When his eyes landed on the woman’s face, his wine glass slipped from his fingers.
CRASH.
The crystal glass shattered against the marble floorboards, splashing champagne over his polished leather shoes.
Julian’s face went from flushed triumph to a sickening, translucent, ghostly white. His jaw dropped open, his breath hitching violently in his throat as his brain frantically tried to process the impossible image before him.
"C... Clara...?" Julian choked out, his voice cracking into a high, pathetic pitch.
Evelyn stopped mid-chew, her eyes bulging out of her head as her plate of caviar trembled in her hands. "What in God's name... Clara?!"
Chloe gasped, dropping her phone onto the rug. "No... no, that's impossible! She was at home washing dishes twenty minutes ago! Where did she get those diamonds?!"
Victoria stared at me, her practiced, charming smile freezing into a mask of pure, unadulterated shock as she recognized the Midnight Sovereign diamond—a piece worth more than the entire valuation of Moretti Logistics.

I didn't look at them. I didn't slow my stride.
I walked past Julian and his family as if they were nothing more than furniture, my head held high, my eyes fixed straight ahead as Arthur guided me toward the raised executive dais at the front of the grand ballroom.
