Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Borrowed ApartmentBy 2:00 AM, the entire private executive trauma floor at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital in Manhattan was operating under an impenetrable, non-negotiable tactical lockdown.

Outside the grand mahogany double doors of ICU Suite 601, eight armed Vance Security operators stood post, preventing anyone without high-level clearance from stepping onto the floor.
Inside the sunlit, state-of-the-art suite, I lay resting on a plush hospital bed. My left arm had been set, cast, and stabilized by New York's top orthopedic surgeons. My eight-month pregnant belly was continuously monitored by an elite team of maternal-fetal specialists led by Dr. Karen Whitmore. The fetal heartbeat of my unborn baby girl was strong, steady, and loud.
Sitting in a velvet armchair beside my bed, holding my right hand in his broad, calloused palm, was my father, Vincent Moretti.
Beside his chair stood Senior Corporate Prosecutor Bridget Colton, holding three heavy, red-sealed leather binders.
"Dad..." I spoke softly, my voice raspy from crying, "Ethan told me for five years that I was penniless... that my mother left me with nothing."
Vincent’s storm-gray eyes locked onto mine, a sudden, terrifying fire flashing within their depths. He gently patted my hand before turning to Bridget.
"Explain it to my daughter, Bridget," Vincent commanded ice-cold.
Bridget Colton opened the top leather binder, sliding digital ledgers, bank registries, and property deeds flat onto the tray table before me:
"Lena," Bridget spoke crisp and fast, her sharp blue eyes holding surgical professional fury. "The forensic audit into your husband, Ethan Vance, his mistress, Vanessa Sterling, and your late mother’s estate is complete."
Bridget tapped the digital screens:
THE STOLEN MATERNAL INHERITANCE: Certified financial records proving your late mother, Claire Bennett-Moretti, left an irrevocable $85 million trust fund solely in your name upon her death three years ago.
THE EMBAZZLEMENT & MORTGAGE FRAUD: Proof that Ethan Vance forged your signature on twenty-four secondary mortgage deeds, using your $85 million trust collateral to fund his failing architectural firm, purchase his luxury sports cars, and buy Vanessa Sterling’s luxury jewelry collections.
THE SOVEREIGN REAL ESTATE DEED: Original probate titles confirming that the $4 million Manhattan apartment Ethan brought Vanessa into was purchased entirely with your grandfather's inheritance—making Donna Lena Bennett-Moretti the sole 100% legal equity owner of his entire company and residence.
My breath caught in my chest.
My knuckles turned stark white against the hospital sheet.
"He broke my arm over a kitchen counter that I owned," I rasped out, every single word falling like an iron block into the quiet room. "He let his mistress slap me in my own home, while using my mother's blood money to pay for her diamonds."

Vincent Moretti stood up from his chair to his full, imposing six-foot-three height. He adjusted the cuffs of his tailored bespoke dark suit, his face carved from cold, unyielding granite.
"They thought you were an isolated, helpless girl with no family to protect her, Lena," Vincent swore, his deep baritone an iron oath that vibrated through the floorboards. "Tomorrow morning at the Vance Architectural Board Assembly... we show them who rules New York."
