Chapter 6 - The Trial of RedemptionOne year after the incident in the lobby, the final divorce decree and asset division hearing took place before the Cook County Family Court.

Vincent Moretti sat at the defense table wearing a simple, off-the-rack grey suit, his face gaunt, hollowed-out, dark circles under his bloodshot eyes. He looked like a shadow of the fearsome executive who had once ruled Chicago.
I walked down the central aisle of the courtroom wearing an exquisite tailored midnight-blue silk suit, my dark chestnut hair pulled back in an elegant knot, my posture tall, broad, six-foot-tall, and sovereign.
When I took the witness stand, taking the oath with my right hand raised, Vincent looked at me with a desperate, groveling terror.
"Mrs. Moretti," Judge Margaret Vance asked, "are there any remaining financial or custody disputes between you and the respondent?"
I looked straight into the eyes of the man who had traded his family for an assistant, my clear, velvet voice echoing cleanly off the high marble walls.
"No, Your Honor," I testified softly, every word dropped with absolute, unbroken truth. "The respondent has surrendered all executive equity to our son's trust. I ask only for sole legal custody and the permanent enforcement of our protective boundaries."
Vincent stood up slowly from his seat, tears welling in his eyes, his voice cracking into raspy, pathetic threads.
"Claire... please," Vincent wept, reaching out a trembling hand across the mahogany rail. "I know I ruined everything. I know I was a fool. But please... let me see my son. Let me be a father to Matteo."
I looked at him with zero anger, zero hatred, and zero regret.
"You can see Matteo during court-monitored visitation twice a month, Vincent," I answered softly, my voice standing firm, unbroken, and sovereign. "And when he grows up, I will teach him how to be a real man... a man who honors his family and never trades his integrity for a lie."
Judge Vance slammed her gavel down with a sharp THWACK.

"Divorce granted," Judge Vance declared. "Full legal and physical custody awarded to Mrs. Claire Moretti. Financial trust transfers confirmed."
I walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sunlight, surrounded by silver applause, news cameras, and my loyal legal team, completely, beautifully free.
