Chapter 1 - The Gathering at the EstateThe heavy iron gates of the Moretti estate in Lake Forest swung open with a slow, mournful groan. Rain had begun to slick the winding cobblestone driveway, casting a dark shimmer across the manicured lawns.

I sat in the rear of my black sedan, watching the rain droplets trail down the glass window. Beside me, sitting in a plush leather car seat, my one-month-old son, Matteo, slept peacefully, blissfully unaware that his mother had just ignited a war that would burn down his father's precious reputation.

Ten minutes behind us, Vincent’s sleek sports car pulled up, followed by a taxi carrying Sophia Reynolds.

When I stepped out onto the marble portico holding Matteo securely against my chest in a soft cashmere blanket, Vincent sprinted through the rain toward me. His tailored suit jacket was damp, his dark hair disheveled, and his dark gray eyes burned with a mixture of intense rage and sweating panic.

"Claire!" Vincent growled, his voice a low, warning rumble as he tried to grab my arm. "Have you lost your mind?! Sending flowers to the office? Shouting in front of my senior staff? You turned a private family matter into a public circus!"

I stopped on the marble steps. I didn't yell. I didn't shrink back. I looked at my husband of four years with a cold, weightless indifference that made his hand freeze mid-air.

"You turned our marriage into a circus the second you transferred eight point five million dollars of joint funds to buy your assistant a gated mansion, Vincent," I replied, my voice smooth as silk. "I merely provided the opening performance."

Sophia stepped out of the taxi behind him, wearing a cream-colored wool coat, her face pale, her hands trembling as she held her purse against her chest. She looked like a terrified deer, but I knew the calculating predator lurking beneath that fragile, innocent exterior.

The grand double mahogany doors were pulled open by the family’s veteran butler, Thomas.

"Mrs. Moretti," Thomas bowed deeply, his eyes filled with profound respect. "The Patriarch and Mr. Moretti Senior are waiting for you in the formal library."

I glided past Vincent, ignoring his frantic, low curses, and walked through the soaring marble foyer toward the library.

Sitting near the grand stone hearth were two men who commanded respect across North America:

Lorenzo Moretti (The Patriarch): Eighty-two years old, founder of Moretti Global Logistics, a man whose word was absolute law in Chicago business and society.

Dominic Moretti (Vincent’s Father): Fifty-eight years old, current Executive Managing Director, a severe, honorable man who loathed public scandal above all else.

When Lorenzo saw me walk in carrying baby Matteo, his stern face softened into a warm, paternal look.

"Claire, my dear child," Lorenzo spoke, his gravelly baritone filling the room. "Bring my great-grandson over here."

I walked over, allowing the patriarch to gently touch Matteo’s small cheek.

Vincent and Sophia stepped into the library behind me. The air in the room instantly dropped below freezing.

Dominic Moretti stood up from his leather chair, pulling a thick Manila folder from his desk, slamming it flat onto the mahogany table between them.

THWACK!

"Vincent," Dominic announced, his voice vibrating with pure, unadulterated fury. "Explain to this room why an eight-point-five-million-dollar wire transfer left the family holding firm four days ago to purchase a deed in Lake Forest registered to a Miss Sophia Reynolds."
