Chapter 6 - The Fall of Celeste ValeWhile Adrian faced federal fraud indictments in Chicago, his mother, Celeste Vale, was discovering the true price of her arrogant cruelty.

Without Adrian’s corporate income and with Vale Global's secondary expense accounts frozen under my trustee authority, the lavish lifestyle Celeste had maintained for thirty years collapsed overnight.

At 10:00 AM three weeks after the boardroom purge, Celeste sat in the marble foyer of the Vale family’s twenty-million-dollar Gold Coast mansion, surrounding five federal receivers and building inspectors.

Celeste wore a rumpled silk robe, her face gaunt, her silver hair unkempt, tears of frantic rage streaming down her face as she thrashed her hands against the receivers.

"YOU CAN'T SEIZE MY HOME!" Celeste shrieked frantically. "THIS MANSION HAS BEEN IN THE VALE FAMILY FOR GENERATIONS!"

"This mansion was placed as secondary collateral for Vale Global’s commercial credit lines three years ago by your son, Mrs. Vale," the lead receiver stated flatly, holding out an official judicial eviction notice. "Under the master trust restructuring decree executed by Trustee Evelyn Sterling Vance, the property is being liquidated to reimburse the company's embezzled funds."

A black armored sedan pulled up to the front driveway.

I stepped out onto the marble walkway, wearing a breathtaking cream wool coat, holding my three-month-old son, Leo, wrapped safely in a soft blue cashmere blanket against my chest.

Celeste rushed toward the front glass doors, pressing her hands against the glass, screaming hysterically through the security speaker.

"EVELYN! YOU MONSTER! YOU DESTROYED MY SON! YOU'RE THROWING AN OLD WOMAN INTO THE STREET!"

I stopped on the marble steps, looking at her through the glass with quiet, weightless pity.

"You told me three months ago that a smart wife never questions a powerful man, Celeste," I spoke softly, my clear voice carrying through the intercom. "And you told me to sign the settlement without causing problems because Adrian was offering far more than I deserved."

Celeste squeezed her eyes shut, a fresh, agonizing wave of sobs breaking from her throat.

"I didn't destroy your family, Celeste," I revealed, every word dropped like a final, unbroken truth. "Your arrogant, cruel son destroyed it. I simply protected my child's birthright."

I turned my back on her, holding my sleeping son close against my heart, stepping back into the warm sedan as the federal marshals began clearing the mansion.
