Chapter 2 - The Envelope on the OakThe courtroom went dead, breathlessly quiet.

Adrian’s brow furrowed in sudden, sharp irritation. He adjusted his gold cuff links, leaning forward over his table. "Evelyn, stop making a scene," he warned in a low, sharp whisper across the aisle. "You're embarrassing yourself."

"Silence in the gallery," Judge Vance slammed his gavel down once. SLAM! "Mrs. Vale, explain your allegation of fraud."

I opened my leather briefcase, pulling out two sealed white Manila folders bound by red judicial wax seals.

I walked down the central aisle, stepping up to the clerk’s desk, laying the two folders flat before the judge.

"The first act of fraud, Your Honor," I stated cleanly, my hazel eyes flashing with an unshakeable fire, "is that Mr. Adrian Vale executed his divorce petition while deliberately concealing the existence of a direct, legitimate primary heir to the Vale Global corporate trust."

Adrian let out a loud, scoffing laugh, shaking his head toward his mother. "A direct heir?! What is she talking about?! We don't have children! She's hysterical!"

Celeste sneered softly, dabbing her lip with a silk handkerchief. "Your Honor, my son has been divorced from this woman emotionally for over a year. She is fabricating claims to extort corporate stock."

I turned my head slowly, looking straight into Celeste’s cold eyes.

"Four weeks ago, Celeste," I revealed, every word dropped into the silent courtroom like a heavy block of cold granite, "while your son was celebrating on a yacht in Cannes with his latest mistress, I gave birth to a healthy baby boy at Northwestern Memorial Hospital."

The air was sucked out of the room.

Adrian froze. His dark eyes bulged out of his head as his hands gripped the edge of his mahogany table so hard his knuckles turned white. "What... what did you just say?"

"His name is Leo Arthur Vale," I continued, stepping closer to their table, pulling a certified high-definition document from the first folder. "And this is the certified genetic DNA test executed by the Cook County Forensic Medical Board, verifying a ninety-nine point nine nine percent biological match to Adrian Vale."

Judge Vance picked up the DNA certificate, his eyes scanning the official state seals and laboratory signatures. His expression turned stone-cold as he looked down over his glasses at Adrian.

"Mr. Vale," Judge Vance demanded sharply, "did you have knowledge of this birth?"

"No! Your Honor! I swear to God I didn't know!" Adrian stammered, his polished baritone dropping into a raw, frantic squeak. "She never told me! She hid the pregnancy from me!"

"I called your private line three times while I was placed on emergency hospital bed rest, Adrian," I corrected flatly. "You let every call go to voicemail while your assistant sent me synthetic flowers and your mother told me a smart wife doesn't ask questions."
