Chapter 5 - Reclaiming the MirrorBack at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, the afternoon sun streamed through the large double windows of the VIP recovery suite, casting a warm, golden glow across the white sheets.

I sat propped up against a stack of feather pillows, slowly sipping a cup of warm chamomile tea that Claire had brought me. The burning pain across my chest and arms had subsided into a dull, manageable ache, thanks to the advanced skin-graft treatments and specialized burn creams provided by the elite medical team my sister had flown in from Zurich.

The door opened quietly, and Claire stepped inside, holding a sleek black tablet and a cup of black coffee.

"Well," Claire smiled gently, pulling up a chair beside the bed. "Luke’s arraignment has been expedited. Bail has been denied entirely due to the severity of the flight risk and the newly uncovered evidence regarding Evelyn’s death in Boston."

I looked down at the steaming tea in my hands, feeling a profound, heavy weight slowly lifting off my chest—a weight I hadn't even fully realized I was carrying until it started to dissolve.

"Evelyn..." I murmured. "Did the police find out what really happened to her?"

"They reopened the cold case this morning," Claire nodded, her expression softening. "The medical examiner in Boston is reviewing the original autopsy files with modern forensic toxicology. Turns out, Evelyn’s 'kitchen accident' featured the exact same chemical signatures of thermal trauma and delayed poisoning that showed up in your medical files. Luke is looking at multiple life sentences without parole."

I closed my eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. "For five years, I thought I was crazy, Claire. I genuinely believed my body was broken. I believed I was failing him as a wife."

"You never failed him, Caroline," Claire said softly, reaching out to squeeze my uninjured hand. "You survived him. And that makes you the strongest person I know."

She handed me a small, polished hand mirror from the bedside table.

"Here. It’s time you looked at yourself again. Not as the victim Luke tried to create... but as a Sterling."

With trembling fingers, I took the mirror and raised it to my face.

The physical scars on my cheeks and jawline were still visible, angry red lines fading into pink tissue under the care of the doctors. But as I looked into my own eyes, I didn't see the hollow, terrified, beaten woman who had cowered in the kitchen while Luke picked up the boiling pot.

I saw a survivor. I saw strength. I saw the unyielding spirit of a woman who had walked through the fires of hell and come out the other side.

"I'm ready," I whispered, setting the mirror down.

"Ready for what?" Claire asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Ready to go home."
