Chapter 2 - The Sister’s Dossier and the Hidden TruthWithin forty-five minutes of that phone call, Room 304 of St. Jude’s Memorial was transformed from a simple hospital recovery ward into a secured federal holding zone.

Dr. Sandra Vance, the attending physician who had first exposed Luke’s lies, had locked the doors from the inside and stationed two armed local police officers outside. Luke had been dragged down to the precinct for emergency questioning regarding domestic violence, thermal assault, and suspicious maternal mortality, screaming obscenities and hurling threats about his corporate lawyers the entire way.
Yet, even with Luke gone, the air in the room remained charged with tension.
The elevator doors at the end of the sterile hallway chimed, followed by the rapid, purposeful click of heels against the linoleum. The door swung open, and Claire strode into the room.
She looked entirely different from the soft-spoken sister I remembered from five years ago. Dressed in a sharp charcoal pantsuit, her dark hair pulled back into a severe knot, she radiated an aura of unyielding power and cold, calculated vengeance. Behind her walked two formidable men in tailored suits carrying heavy leather briefcases—corporate security specialists and private investigators.
Claire took one look at my bandaged arms, the IV lines hooked into my hands, and the pale, hollow contours of my face, and a sharp gasp escaped her lips. She rushed to the side of the bed, gently framing my face with her hands, careful not to touch the burns.
"My God, Caroline..." Claire whispered, her voice breaking as tears pooled in her eyes. "Look what he did to you. Look what that animal did."
"Claire... how did you know?" I managed to whisper, my fingers weakly gripping her wrist. "When you said you'd been waiting for this call... what did you mean?"
Claire straightened up, signaling her lead investigator to step forward. The man placed a thick, leather-bound dossier onto the over-bed tray table and flipped it open.
"I knew because Luke Vance is not a self-made tech entrepreneur, and he certainly didn't meet you by chance in that coffee shop six years ago," Claire said, her voice dropping into a chilling register. "Luke was a failing, bankrupt fraud even before you married him. And our family... well, Caroline, you forgot something important about our family."
I stared at her, confused. "What are you talking about? We’re just ordinary—”
"We are the Sterlings," Claire interrupted softly. "Our grandfather founded Sterling Bio-Diagnostics and Pharmaceutical Research. And our father, before he passed, left a multi-billion-dollar medical trust in our names. Luke didn't court you because he loved you, Caroline. He targeted you because his first wife died under very similar, highly suspicious circumstances in Boston five years before he met you."
My heart pounded against my ribs so hard it felt like it would crack my healing sternum. "His... his first wife?"
"Her name was Evelyn," the private investigator chimed in, stepping forward and laying out a series of old newspaper clippings and medical examiner reports across the table. "Evelyn died in a mysterious 'kitchen explosion' that resulted in severe thermal burns and a terminated late-term pregnancy. The official ruling was an accident. But Evelyn’s family was poor, uneducated, and easily silenced by a massive settlement paid out by an anonymous corporate benefactor—an offshore account linked directly to Luke Vance’s cousin."
Claire looked down at me, her eyes burning with fierce determination. "When Luke married you, he thought he had hit the jackpot again. But when you started getting pregnant, something changed. Our family’s medical lineage carries a rare genetic marker—a dominant chromosomal trait that statistically guarantees male offspring in every single pregnancy."
The room seemed to spin.
"Wait..." I breathed, the pieces of the puzzle violently snapping together in my mind. "The miscarriages... every single one of them was a boy."
"Because Luke didn't want a son," Claire said grimly, tapping a finger against a forensic pathology report in the dossier. "Luke suffers from a severe psychological personality disorder rooted in malignant narcissism and pathological misogyny. He didn't want an heir who would challenge his control; he wanted a broken, dependent victim whom he could psychologically torture, isolate, and manipulate forever. Every time you got pregnant with a healthy boy, he intentionally sabotaged it—drugged you, starved you, and inflicted trauma to force a miscarriage—so he could blame your body and keep you trapped in his web of abuse."
I stared at the documents, the horror of the last five years washing over me in a tidal wave of grief, rage, and profound awakening.
He hadn't poured boiling water on me out of frustration over a missing son.
He had done it because he enjoyed the power of breaking me piece by piece.
"He's going to jail, right?" I whispered, my voice trembling. "For everything?"
May you like
Claire offered a cold, predatory smile that looked entirely foreign on my sister's face.
"Jail is too good for him, Caroline," Claire replied, picking up her phone. "Luke tried to strip you of everything, leave you penniless, and isolate you from the world. So, by the time my legal team is finished with him tomorrow morning, Luke Vance won't just be behind bars. He’s going to experience what it’s like to lose every single penny, every asset, and every shred of corporate dignity he ever stole."
