Chapter 5 - The Alliance in the ConservatoryBy evening, the storm had broken outside, casting violent streaks of lightning across the glass dome of the conservatory.

I didn't wait for my scheduled shift. Using the service corridors, I made my way directly to the glass-enclosed sanctuary where Emilio now spent his nights, away from the contaminated air of his bedroom suite.

The heavy glass door slid open with a soft hiss.

Emilio was sitting in his wheelchair near a large citrus tree, watching the rain beat against the panes. He looked tired, but the gray pallor of his skin had receded slightly under the influence of real air and clean water over the past forty-eight hours.

He didn't turn around immediately, but his voice cut through the sound of the rain. “You shouldn't be here after hours, Etta. Rafe has his men patrolling every hallway.”

“They were busy downstairs in the legacy archive a few hours ago,” I said quietly, stepping forward and placing the stolen dossier folder right on the glass table in front of him.

Emilio’s eyes slowly shifted from the window down to the thick manila folder. His expression hardened as he recognized the seal.

“Where did you get this?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

“From the sub-basement server room your brother thinks nobody knows about,” I replied steadily. “Your brother isn't just trying to take over the shipping ports, Mr. Corsaro. He’s been draining your personal accounts through shell companies for two years—and the heavy sandalwood diffuser in your bedroom wasn't aromatherapy. It was a chemical mask for slow-acting neurotoxins coming through your ventilation system.”

The silence in the conservatory grew heavy, suffocating.

Emilio’s hands trembled slightly as he reached out and opened the folder. He flipped through the pages, his eyes scanning the financial wire transfers and the medical breakdown analyses. Every muscle in his jaw tightened until the skin pulled taut over his hollow cheeks.

For a long moment, the only sound was the howling wind outside.

“Nineteen months,” Emilio finally spoke, his voice cracking with a sudden, raw emotion. “For nineteen months, my own blood tried to turn me into a ghost in my own house, while everyone else watched and played along. And the only person who noticed... the only person who cared enough to open a window... was the woman hired to empty my trash.”

He looked up at me, his gaze fierce and unyielding. “Why are you telling me this, Etta? What do you want? Protection? Money? A safe passage out of the city?”

May you like

“I want to finish cleaning the house,” I said softly.

Emilio stared at me for a long beat, then a faint, grim smile touched the corners of his mouth.
