Chapter 4 - Shadows in the BasementA beam of a heavy tactical flashlight cut across the dim room.

“I know someone’s down here,” a low, hard voice growled. It was Lucas, Rafe’s primary head of security—a man with broken knuckles and cold, dead eyes who answered only to the younger Corsaro brother.
I pressed my back flat against the cold concrete wall behind the rack, holding my breath, my fingers curled tightly around the handle of a heavy brass maintenance tool I had picked up near the door.
Lucas’s heavy boots crunched on the dusty floorboards. He walked slowly around the perimeter of the room, shining his light over the filing cabinets and the main desk. He paused right in front of the desk I had been standing beside moments earlier.
A gloved hand reached out, touching the surface of the mahogany wood.
“Dust is disturbed,” Lucas muttered to himself, pulling out a compact radio from his tactical vest. “Boss, you were right. Someone’s been in the legacy archive. It looks like someone’s been looking at the old shell company files.”
A crackle of static emerged from the radio before Rafe’s cold voice filtered through. “Find out who it is. If it’s one of the attorneys, throw them out. If it’s domestic staff... deal with it quietly. I want that room scrubbed and locked permanently within the hour.”
“Copy that,” Lucas replied.
He spun around on his heel, his flashlight beam sweeping dangerously close to my hiding spot. I closed my eyes, tightening my grip on the brass tool, preparing for a confrontation that could easily turn fatal.
Suddenly, a loud chime echoed from the main hallway above—the security alarm signaling a breach at the estate’s front security gates.

Lucas swore under his breath, snapped his radio back onto his belt, and bolted out of the room, slamming the heavy steel door behind him.
I let out a long, shaky breath, sliding down the wall to the floor. The trap was closing in, but I now possessed the exact piece of evidence that could completely flip the war inside Corsaro House.
