Chapter 5 - ResurrectionFor three full seconds, the world stopped spinning.

I stopped breathing. The files in my hands slipped, scattering across the carpet. My eyes locked onto the man standing twenty feet away from me—the man I had mourned, the man I had searched for in every crowd, the father of my child.

“Caleb?” I whispered, the word tearing its way out of my throat.

Caleb’s eyes darted away from Julian and landed straight on me. His chest heaved as he took in the sight of me, and then slowly drifted down to the baby carrier strapped to my chest. When his eyes met Lily’s dark, curious gaze, tears welled instantly in the hardened traveler's eyes.

“Elena...” he choked out, his voice thick with unmeasurable grief and joy. “God... Elena, I’m so sorry.”

Julian stumbled backward, his face turning the color of ash. “No... no, that’s impossible! We verified the accident! We verified the payout!”

“You verified a ghost story, Julian,” Caleb said, stepping forward into the room, his fists clenched at his sides. “Your hitmen weren't quite as thorough as you thought. When your men ran my car off the Indiana highway four years ago, I managed to crawl out before it went over the ravine. I knew if I came back to Chicago right away, you and my father would finish the job and hurt Elena to get to me. So I went underground. I lived off the grid, gathering proof of every single dollar you stole from the community trust.”

Caleb finally stopped just inches away from me. He reached out with trembling, calloused hands, gently touching Lily’s tiny cheek. The baby blinked up at him, wrapping one small finger around his thumb—the exact same gesture Ethan had made two days ago.

“She has your eyes,” Caleb whispered, a tear finally cutting a clean path through the dust on his cheek.

“She has your stubbornness,” I managed to choke out through my own tears, before throwing my arms around his neck, burying my face in his chest as the years of pain, fear, and loneliness finally washed away.

Ethan stood by the desk, watching us with a quiet, profound peace settling over his features. He didn't interrupt; he simply turned his gaze back toward Julian and the terrified attorneys standing behind him.

“Well, Julian,” Ethan said, his voice ringing with absolute authority. “It looks like you have a federal indictment to review. And as for the board... I suggest you all resign before I let my brother present his evidence directly to the FBI.”

Julian didn't wait for another word. He shoved past his attorneys, bolted out the door, and sprinted down the private corridor, his corporate empire crumbling around him in a matter of seconds.
