Chapter 3 - The Corporate SiegeFriday morning arrived with grey skies and a bitter Chicago wind that rattled the windows of Callahan Global Holdings.

When I stepped through the revolving glass doors holding Lily—who was safely strapped to my chest in a baby carrier—the security guards didn't stop me. In fact, they nodded with a strange, respectful tension. Ethan had given direct orders: I was under his personal protection, and anyone who questioned my presence answered directly to him.

As I took the private executive elevator to the top floor, the digital display glowed in silence. When the doors slid open, I found Ethan waiting for me in the hallway, flanked by two towering private security operatives.

“You shouldn't have brought her here today, Elena,” Ethan said, though his eyes softened immediately when he saw Lily reach out a tiny hand toward his lapel. “It’s going to get dangerous.”

“I’m not hiding in an apartment while my fiancé’s family plays games with our lives,” I said firmly, stepping past him into the grand executive suite. “If Julian is trying to erase the truth, I’m helping you dig it up.”

Ethan stared at me for a long moment, a faint, approving smile touching the corners of his mouth. Then he turned to his lead security officer. “Lock down the eastern wing. No one enters or leaves without my authorization. And bring me the physical server logs from 2022.”

For hours, we poured through digitized financial transfers, encrypted emails, and internal memos. Piece by piece, the dark machinery of Arthur Callahan’s empire exposed itself.

Caleb hadn't just walked away from his family fortune. He had discovered that Julian and his father were systematically embezzling millions from community development funds managed by Callahan Global—money intended for low-income housing projects in Chicago. Caleb had threatened to go to the federal authorities unless they returned the funds.

That was why he had vanished.

“They didn't just push him out,” I whispered, staring at a signed transfer authorization bearing Julian’s signature from the exact week Caleb disappeared. “They framed him for financial crimes, forced him into hiding, and when he wouldn't back down...”

My voice broke. I couldn't finish the sentence.

Ethan slammed his fist onto the mahogany desk, the heavy thud echoing off the glass walls. “My father protected the company’s stock price over his own flesh and blood. And Julian was right there beside him, pulling the strings.”

Before Ethan could make his next move, the heavy oak doors of the office flew open.

Julian Callahan marched into the room, flanked by three corporate attorneys and the head of internal security. His tailored suit was immaculate, but his face was twisted into a mask of corporate arrogance.

“Well, well, well,” Julian sneered, clapping his hands slowly. “Playing detective in the penthouse. How romantic, Ethan. But you’re sitting in a chair you won't occupy by Monday morning.”

Ethan didn't blink. He stood up slowly, towering over his cousin. “Get out of my office, Julian before I have you thrown out the window.”

“You can’t throw out the majority shareholder,” Julian smiled smugly, tossing a thick legal document onto the desk. “As of ten minutes ago, the board of directors voted to invoke emergency clause 11-B. Due to ‘severe conflicts of interest, reckless endangerment of corporate assets, and harboring unauthorized personnel,’ you have been temporarily stripped of your CEO powers, Ethan. Effective immediately.”
