Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Biscayne BetrayalBy 2:00 p.m. that afternoon, the top-floor executive boardroom at The Knox Dynamics Tower overlooking Wall Street was operating under an impenetrable, non-negotiable tactical lockdown.

Outside the grand mahogany entrance doors, six Vance Security operators stood guard. Inside, my sixty-eight-year-old mother, Donna Eleanor Knox, sat at the head of a thirty-foot black granite table, wearing an elegant dark wool suit, her silver hair styled regally, her sharp blue eyes holding an absolute, unshakeable authority.

Across from her sat Senior Corporate Prosecutor Bridget Colton and two federal forensic accounting experts.

I sat in a high-backed leather chair, my topcoat discarded, my expensive linen shirt rumpled, my face pale and hollow, holding a glass of untouched bourbon.

Bridget Colton opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders, sliding digital ledgers, wiretap logs, and real estate deeds flat onto the table before my mother and me:

"Adrian," Bridget spoke crisp and fast, her voice dropping into a register of surgical fury. "The forensic audit into Sienna Vale, your former executive assistant, and the Miami transactions is complete."

I leaned forward, my broad hands planted flat against the granite, my gray eyes bloodshot. "Tell me."

Bridget tapped the digital displays:

THE FABRICATED THREAT SCHEME: Intercepted wiretaps proving Sienna Vale was secretly working with rival defense contractor Victor Vane. Sienna’s emotional outburst and threat to leave you in Miami was a calculated ploy to keep you out of New York while Victor Vane attempted an illegal proxy takeover of Knox Dynamics during Claire’s labor.

THE ELEVEN-POINT-EIGHT MILLION DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT: Proof that Sienna Vale immediately transferred the Biscayne Bay penthouse title into a Panamanian shell company co-owned by Victor Vane thirty minutes after you signed the deed.

THE SOVEREIGN MATERNAL CHARTER: Original trust deeds confirming thirty-six-year-old Claire Bennett-Knox as sole sixty percent controlling common equity holder over the entire Knox Defense Network—a charter established by your late father to ensure that if you ever compromised the family's integrity, your wife would take total command.

My jaw tightened until my teeth nearly cracked.

My mother slowly stood up from the table, walking around the granite counter, her hand resting heavily over my shoulder.

"You traded your son's birth, your daughter's life, and your wife's sacred trust for fifty-two hours of cheap ego in Miami, Adrian," Eleanor spoke, her silver voice ringing with profound, heartbroken disappointment. "Claire didn't just protect herself. She saved this entire empire from the snake you brought into your bed."

Tears of profound, gut-wrenching horror spilled over my lashes, scalding my cheeks.

I had spent four months believing Sienna loved me, ignoring the quiet, radiant woman who had endured five years of fertility treatments, needles, and tears to give me twins. I had let my daughter suffer alone in an incubator while I raised a champagne glass on a yacht.

"Where is she, Mother?" I rasped out, dropping my head into my hands, sobbing broken, desperate tears. "Please... just tell me where my children are."

Eleanor looked down at me with stern, unyielding resolve.

"Tomorrow morning at the Knox Global Assembly," Eleanor declared flatly. "Your wife will be there. And if you want to earn the right to look at your children again... you will stand beside her and destroy Victor Vane."
